HYDSYS is software designed to help you analyze storm drainage systems. Using selected hydrologic methods, it covers the entire analytic process from the determination of a design rainstorm to model calibration, and the production of hyetographs, hydrographs, plans and profiles. Using your pipe network and zoning designations for paved and grassed contributing areas, it will highlight undersized pipes and will calculate the required pipe diameters, capacities and velocities. Features which allow models to be linked together make it possible to analyze systems of virtually any size or complexity. Using HYDSYS, you may simulate the drainage of a subdivision before and after development and then determine the attenuating effects of stormwater detention ponds. It will enable you to predict a system's performance during extreme or high return period rainstorms or to identify and correct deficiencies of developing urban drainage systems.

The waterfront is the scene of the most dramatic interactions between water, wind, and land. Moving air and water carry material from place to place, eroding and depositing, constantly changing the shoreline. If erosion is not balanced by accretion, the shore will be washed away. Understanding the dynamics of erosion and accretion along the shore is important: to safeguard your property, you need to know how to work with these natural forces, not against them.

TITLE: Regulatory Jurisdiction Over Vegetative Operations
"Regulation of wetlands is undergoing significant change. Last August, the Clinton Administration proposed sweeping reforms to the federal wetlands regulatory scheme. Similarly broad legislation has been introduced in the Congress. Although wetlands reform bills have been proposed in the past several sessions of Congress, there is growing consensus that a bill will pass this year. Clean Water Act reauthorization and wetlands are at the top of Congress' environmental agenda for 1994."
"Over the last two centuries, the United States has lost half of its historic wetlands base, resulting in increased flooding, poorer water quality and diminished wildlife populations across the country. Section 404 of the Clean Water Act has reduced wetlands loss, but the United States continues to lose tens of thousands of irreplaceable acres of wetlands annually. NWF urges Congress to ensure that the Clean Water Act's goal to "restore and maintain" the nation's waters and wetlands is retained."

The Geotechnical Laboratory of the Delft University of Technology and the Dutch Centre for Civil Engineering Research and Codes (CUR) are organizing a large scale field test on a 5.5 metre deep excavation. In this test two steel sheet pile walls are heavily instrumented and monitored. One wall, constructed with double U-profiles, is loaded in the Serviceability Limit State to investigate the loss of effective stiffness due to slip in the 'free' interlock (oblique bending). The opposite wall (Z-piles) is loaded close to the Ultimate Limit State. In the latter wall a plastic hinge is let developed. The test will be carried out in September 1998 and will be continued for a period of about 1 year to investigate the long-term effects of soft peat and clay on both sheet pile walls.
