The Kouhi Family Story
In 1763 the Wahtari farm neighbors were Jaako Juhanpoika and his family on the Kouhi farm. Jaako Wahtari and Jaako Kouhi came to a land-swapping agreement. Now the family lands were all connected. Jaako, Brita and their son Jaako along with Heikki and Maria (Jaako's elderly parents) now began to live on the Kouhi farm. To all around they would be known as "Kouhi" Four years after becoming a Kouhi, Heikki died. Three years later in 1770 Jaako and Brita added another son to their family, Antti When Antti was six years old and his brother Jaako was 23, their mother Brita died. Young Jaako married Liisa Hyvanen, and they celebrated the birth of their daughter Maria. In 1790, Antti was 20. He married Justina Arvela and their family grew with the birth of their first son, also named Antti In 1792 Jaako, the father, was 64 years old. His son Jaako was 39, and Antti was 22. Jaako decided it was time for his son's to have their own farms. The land was divided, and with it came another name change. Their new names reflected their new farmlands.

In 1798, Jaako the senior, died at 70 years of age. And here the family history separates. Jaako and his branch went one way, while Antti and his branch went another. Over time, the "Ala" and "Yli" would be dropped and both familes would be known as Kouhi. Generations later, the split was a distant memory. Then, in the year 2000 Antti's great-great-great-great-grandchildrenr Beverly Kouhi (in Thunder Bay, Canada) and Timo Kouhi (in Vaasa, Finland) would meet over the Internet. Their search would lead them to Mauri Mikola, there great-great-great-great-great grandson of Jaako. 208 years afther the family history was separated, the family lines were re-connected.
