A Day in the Arctic

This is just a taste of what it's like in Arctic Alaska. This is one of the reasons I like living here.

I Live about 35 miles North of the Arctic Circle in a town called Kotzebue, it was named after a German Explorer. Kotz. started out many years ago as a small Eskimo village and over the years has become a second class City.

Kotzebue sit's on the edge of the Kotzebue sound. During the winter it will freeze over to become travel routes for many, to the outer villages. There is only one way in and out of here and  Alaska Airlines is the main carrier for travel to and from Kotzebue. There are several other carriers for the towns cargo needs.

There is one main Hotel here, it is the "Nullugvik" with gift shop, travel agent and Restaurant. There are many other places to eat as well.  In the gift shop you will find some very nice art work from local Native carvers. The Hotel along with the local Museum are owned by the NANA Native Corp. During the summer months the Museum offers several shows by the Northern Lights Dancers, they have traveled the world to share this part of the Inupiaq Eskimo culture.

Also here in town you will find a fully staffed local Police Department which I work for and  includes the Regional Jail that supports some 12 villages from around the area.
