How To Create Homepages For The Corridor

Back to Index

NOTE: This is easy! Don't be scared just because it is a lot of text; you barely have to know anything in order to create a homepage.

This page contains information on how to create and edit pages for the Corridor. It is of course still perfectly possible to communicate orally through the air in the Corridor even though we have a homepage, but it may sometimes feel calming to have things written down. There are two ways to create homepages: Either write the text in a word processor and ask a friend to convert it to a homepage, or write a homepage on your own.

Method 1. Write The Homepage In A Word Processor

You can write your page using a normal word processor and then give the page to me (Sven) and I'll convert it to a homepage and upload it automatically. If you want pictures you can send them as separate files. If you want links you can write so in the text and I'll convert it into a link.

Method 2. Create A Homepage Directly

This is easy with eg. the built-in homepage builder in Netscape. You first create a homepage which you save on the hard disc and then you upload it to Internet so that all people in the world can see it.

2.1 Write The Page

This is easiest if you use Netscape. It can be done with Explorer and other web browsers as well, but Netscape is usually to prefer.

Browse to the homepage you want to edit, and select "Edit page" in the menu. (Here is an empty page which you can use if you want to create a homepage from scratch.) A word processor is now launched with your document open. Begin by saving the document with a suitable name on your hard disc. Remember that no filenames must contain åäö or any other non-English characters. Instead, just strip out the dots from the characters (so åäö will become aao).

The word processor is fairly easy to use and the best way to learn computer programs is generally to test on your own, but in case you want an extremely quick start you can use some of the following tips:

  • To create a link, select the text that shall be clickable and go to the menu "Insert/Link". If the homepage you want to link to belongs to the Corridor, just enter the filename without path. If it is in some other place, you have to fill in the whole address, eg http://www.agarics.com/chantarelle.html.
  • To add images, choose "Insert/Image." A window is brought up in which you can select an image file from your hard drive. Don't forget that you must upload the image file separately. It will not be included in the html document! If you change the name of the image file, you must also change the reference to it in the html document.
  • Don't select a font for the text! When someone reads it on another computer, chances are big that they don't have that particular font installed so the page will look wrong.
  • There is a place in the program where you can select a title for your homepage. The title is not the same thing as the header that you wrote at the top of the page, but rather the text that will be shown eg. as the name of a bookmark pointing to the page. In Netscape this is done in the menu "Format/Page colors and properties", under the tab "General". You may have to do it in other (similar) ways in other programs.

The main page of your personal page must be named index.html. If you have other pages as well you can name them arbitrarily.

2.2 Copy The Page To Internet

When you have finished writing the page, it is time to copy it from the hard disc to Internet. It's fine to send it to me (Sven) or Joacim, but it's also pretty easy to upload it yourself.

1. Browse To Geocities' Page For Uploading Pages.

2. Log In. Enter the user name korridoren_flogsta and the password. (I'm certainly not going to unveil the password here; you have to ask that with your mouth).

3. Upload Files. Now you stand in a somewhat primitive file manager. You can do several things here, eg. upload files, rename files and delete files. All actions basically follow the same system so I'm only going to discuss in detail how to upload files:

    1. Select A Directory. You must first go to the directory where you want to put the homepage. Only one directory can be seen at a time, and that's where the files are going to be copied. If you upload any generic Corridor homepage, like the Activities page, you have to be in the root directory, while all private pages must be placed in a directory with your name on. For instance, Ola's pages are situated in the directory "ola_gustafsson". On the page which is opened in your browser is a list of files. On the top of the list are the directories. To change directory, click on the one you want to change to. Hence, if you want to change to Emelie's directory, "emelie_westberg". Then you can upload files to her homepage. (Note that it is highly unmoral to upload pages to anyone else than oneself. If you do that you will go to hell).

    2. Copy Files. When you have entered the appropriate directory, it's time to copy the homepage from your hard disc to Internet. Scroll down the page almost to the bottom where the text "EZ Upload" appears. Below the text are five boxes, and to the right of each box is a button with the text "Browse" on top of it. Click one of the buttons. A window is opened where you can choose any file from your hard disc. Choose the homepage which you have created and click OK. The filename is displayed in the box to the left of the "Browse" button. You can use the other buttons to upload several files simultaneously. Click "Upload files" when you are finished.

If everything went correctly, the same homepage is reloaded, but with a message confirming that you just uploaded the homepages that you uploaded. Now you can upload more pages in the same way if you want to.

By the way, in the dialog box where you could choose a file from your hard disc, only homepage files (*.html) were shown by default. If you need to upload other file types, eg. picture files, you must first enter * as the filename and hit enter. Then all file types will be displayed.

It is also possible to do some more things, like deleting and renaming files. To do that, first check the small box to the left of the files that should be affected and then click "Rename", "Delete" etc.

4. Log Out When you are finished, it's good if you log out by clicking the button "Sign out", which is situated at the top right part of the page below the banner.

2.3 Tell The World

Don't forget to mention your changes in the Guest Book!
