Flogsta Scream As An Mp3

Back To Index

Each night at 10.00 P.M. the Flogsta Scream (Swedish: Flogstavrålet or Flogstaskriket) is carried out. On every roof and all balconies the students start screaming as loud as they can. (The details are descriped below.) The tradition originates from the 12th century when Uppsala was Christianized and it was the result of a misunderstanding of how the prayer is offered. Nowadays most people think of it as a way to get rid of their agonies before an exam, or their aggressions, or just some old spare air in their lungs.

In order to maintain the tradition, and maybe also to spread it, the Corridor has recorded its own Flogsta Scream, which it hereby generously shares with you:

The scream was recorded on the balcony at 10.00 P.M. on April 27, 2000. You hear the voices of Elisabet, Emelie, Hanna, Joacim, Lisa, Rebecka and Sven, plus a number of unknown people including some from house 9.

How Does It Work?

For people who have never tried a Flogsta Scream it can feel good to use the following guide. We recommend that you print it and have it at hand when the time comes, at least the first few times.

Cross Section Of The Flogsta Scream

1. Go out to the balcony or to the roof some minutes before 10 P.M. Start screaming as soon as someone else has started. If it's still quiet, we recommend you to start by yourself at 21.59.57.
2. Grab the railing, lend back as in the figure and take as deep a breath as you can.
3. Throw you body forwards (but make sure that you stay behind the railing) while pressing the air that you breathed in step 2 through your mouth. You must also activate your vocal cords such that a loud noise is generated. It is important that the noise is as strong as possible and you may need some training before you can produce a high quality Flogsta Scream.
4. Continue making this noise as long as you have air left in your lungs. Use the muscles in your belly to press the air out.
5. When there is no air left in your lungs, you must fill them up again to avoid suffocation. Do this by breathing in.
6. You may repeat the scream a couple of times if you want. This is especially recommended if there are other people still screaming on the same balcony/roof as you.
7. When it's quiet at your place, listen for screams from other houses.
8. If someone answers, wait till they are finished and then repeat from step 2.
9. If nobody answers, try to provoke them a little more by repeating from step 2.
10. When the scream has calmed down, hopefully after five minutes or more, it's time to go inside and continue the party. To recover your voice you may need to drink a couple of glasses of water. (We may add a guide in drinking water in a future version of this page.)
