One small step for woman...

Yeah! I did it!!! This morning I woke up with the sun. It was a beautiful day, and I took a moment to gaze at an absolutely breathtaking sunrise! That was something I personally don’t see very often, and it was very inspiring. I was out there because I had a goal to accomplish, and my heart and head set upon achieving it! I’ve recently taken up running again, and today was my first race in I don’t know how long...more than 15 years. I used to quite enjoy it in the first few years of High School.

I arrived at the park where the Las Vegas Track Team was hosting it’s latest event. A 5K and 2 mile race. It was interesting to see runners of all ages there, most of them in excellent shape! As I found out later, the highly outgoing man I’d been talking to was...75 years old!! I would have guessed 55 tops!

I signed up for the 2 mile race, because I wanted to take it easy on my first try. Most of the people there were participating in the 5K. I got to run with the best of them until it was time for me to turn around, and the rest to keep on. The first half was up a slight incline, and I had to walk for part of the way. I alternated the brisk walk with a jog at what seemed like a slow pace compared to the others whizzing by...lol. It was hard, but I imagined you guys cheering me on, and that helped. Thanks for being there! LOL! I crossed the finish line, and it was a great feeling. That is something I would like to experience again and again, as I take on each "hurdle" at a time.

I received a blue ribbon for taking "First Place" of the women in my age group, for the 2 mile race. It doesn’t matter that I was the only one in my category, what does matter is that I have a blue ribbon, and an awesome memory of my first race. My official time was 23:35 for 2 miles.

My next goal is to compete and finish the 5K race on September 30th, 2006. I have just 7 short weeks to train, but as the 75 year old run veteran said "If you can do, 2 miles...5K is just around the corner"

I also realize I need new running shoes, my old cheap ones were starting to hurt my feet by the end of it. Famous Footwear is having the annual buy one, and get one ½ off sale...so I bought myself a pair of Nike Air Aim TL 2 runners, and my 10 year old daughter, Aspen a pair of Nike’s for $20!! Now that’s a deal that’s worth it! Now I can introduce my daughter to running and fitness properly! Maybe my spark will catch on!!

Have a super awesome, and fabulous day!
