July 24, 2000 I would first like to thank you for keeping an up to date listing of schools. I wish I would have found it before I got screwed. This place has 9 Canadian and American teachers on its staff. Of the 9, 6 will be gone by the end of the month. All but one of these teachers have worked here for less than seven months. 4 of the teachers have previous ESL experience with favorable recommendations from there previous employers. The problems at this place are numerous, from simple lying to out right bullying and theft. The employer thinks and has stated that the contract means nothing to him while he requires that the teachers follow it to the dotting of every "i" and the crossing of every "t." The employer has also stated that we were given the wrong contract by the recruiter and he does not feel that he needs to honor it. Health insurance was not provided but premiums were withheld from paychecks. Health insurance was one of the contract guarantees. Requests to verify the proof of insurance have led to harassment of all teachers, the dismissal and resignations of the 6 teachers mentioned previously. Continued invasions of privacy by the Korean staff snooping around teachers' apartments without the knowledge or consent of the teachers. Overtime is forced upon you and not requested of you. Letters of reprimand are more common than toilet paper with several being handed out daily. Denial of usage of the copy machine by foreign teachers while Korean teachers can make copies any time they please. Lack of adequate teaching materials with some classes beginner level classes not having any materials at all. This is where the copy machine would come in handy if use were not denied. The classes are crowded and dirty. The students are undisciplined. Teachers are reprimanded for disciplining students and then when the class gets out of hand, the teacher is reprimanded for not disciplining the students. Very Catch 22. The city is dirty. The air has more smog than Seoul. And the people here treat you like shit because they think that you are a soldier. The fact that this city has several military bases surrounding it could be a contributing factor. On the positive side, it is air conditioned and you are generally paid on time... well, sorta anyway... My advice on this school: Avoid it like the plague. Anon.
