ANFIELD - A BRIEF HISTORY
Anfield was firstly the home of Everton Football Club, from
1884 until 1892, when an argument over rent with the landlord
of Anfield, John Houlding, saw Everton move across Stanley park,
to Goodison
Park. This left Mr Houlding with a stadium with no football club
.So he went on to form Liverpool Football Club. The first major
development at Anfield was the building of the Main stand in 1895,
which seated 3,000
with a paddock at the front. The southern end of the ground was
just rubble and earth, later replaced by concrete, to reward loyal
supporters, as Liverpool had just won there second championship.
The new terrace was said to have 132 steps. Known as the Oakfield
Road Embankment, it opened to a reds 1-0 victory, against Stoke City,
Joe Hewwit gave the reds victory, in front of a 30,000 crowd on
September 1st 1906. Ernest Edwards, Sports Editor of the Liverpool
Post and Echo, christened the terrace, The Spion Kop, were six years
previously, in the Boer war, regiments from Lancashire, mainly from
Liverpool, fought to relieve the town of Ladysmith, when there
commander was killed, the soldiers fought defending a hill called spion kop,
300 men died in the process.
The next major development to the kop was in 1929 when the kop was rebuilt
and a roof added, measured at a staggering 425ft wide and 80 ft high, it made
it the biggest single span structure at an English football ground. The first
game to be seen in front of the "new kop" was against Bury, were Liverpool
ran out eventual 3-0 winners. The flagpole at the kenlyn corner of the kop
was formerly the mast of the Eastern, one of the worlds first iron ships,
which lay broken up in Liverpool docks.
The kop became famous around the world, with the "kopites" singing and flags,
making Anfield one of the most feared stadiums in the world. Opposing teams
would dread playing there, with the kopites in full voice, singing there anthems
such as You'll Never Walk Alone, it has been said that it gave Liverpool a 1-0
lead before the game had started.
With the Taylor Report, in the wake of Hillsborough, saying all stadiums
had to be all-seater by the start of the 1994-95 season, May 30th 1994
saw the "kop?s last stand" against Norwich City. A 1-0 defeat, to a Jeremy
Goss goal, did not spoil the day, the flags were out in force to see a parade
of important Liverpool greats such as Billy Liddel, Phil Thompson, Craig
Johnston and Kenny Dalglish to name but a few. The Anfield Road end has
just had a face lift, increasing Liverpool's capacity, and the Centenary Stand o
pened on September 1st 1992 to mark exactly 100 years since Liverpool were
formed, holding 11,400 seats on two tiers and 30 luxury boxes at mid level.
