Runabout is a generic term for small Federation starships used for relatively short-range interstellar travel. Starfleet has assigned five of these midsize patrol ships on the Grail. Looking rather like shuttlecraft on steroids, these ships have the ability of carrying personnel to planetary landing, defending the Grail, and longer missions away from the starship.
They are approximately twenty meters in length and have both impulse and warp capabilities (max warp: 4.2).
Generally operated by two people, a runabout can be operated by one in a pinch. Like a shuttlecraft, runabouts have a cockpit that incorporates a short-range two-person transporter, as well as seating for four people, including a two-person flight crew. These craft are not built with large groups in mind. They are utilitarian in style, built for purpose and efficiency.
The runabout's aft section contains living accomodations, including bunks and replicators. Directly off the cockpit is a multipurpose room that is good for meetings or dining. Aft of the pilots' compartment is a small living area with bunks and a replicator for food processing. This area makes the craft comfortable for extended travel.
A runabout's exterior shell is made from duranium composites.
Normally, a Galaxy-class vessel would be equipped with 10 Type XI Cargo Shuttlecraft. Due to the nature of her mission into the Gamma quadrant, the Grail has 5 Danube Class runabouts and 5 Type XI Cargo Shuttlecraft. The runabouts are listed below.
