Louis' Spiced Vanilla Gluhwein with Pear

2 cups water

1 to 1� cups of whitesugar

1 tsp. nutmeg

2 cinnamon sticks

18 whole allspice berries

1 vanilla bean

1 peel from one lemon

1 pear sliced

2 bottles dry red wine

.

Combine water, sugar, spices and vanilla bean. Heat until sugar is dissolved. Add lemon rind and pear and simmer 5 mins. Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 30 mins. Strain syrup through sieve and put back in the pot. Add wine. Cover and warm over low heat for 2 hours to set flavors.
