Melee attacks are pretty much the best way to score a high stylish average. They also fill your Devil Trigger gauge much better than guns do. However, this style of combat demands precision of controls, and a good understanding of the weapons available.
All swords start you off at level 1, and can be upgraded to level 5 through God of Time statues or in the Power Up screen just before a mission. Even though it costs a lot, leveling up your swords should take precedence over your other weapons, as the higher level they are the more damage they inflict as well as the sooner they start a stylish combo.

Rebellion The Rebellion is a well-balanced sword with medium range and a fair striking power as well as my favorite. It is the best to use against all type of Agonofinis, and all types of Msira.
Merciless A long, thin blade, found in the Temple of the Arcana, the Merciless has the greatest attack range of all the swords. However, the incresed length takes away from it's strength and makes it one of the weakest. It's still the best sword to use against all types of spell casters, and most airborn demons.
Vendetta This very heavy blade found in the Power Plant. It may have a short range and heavy weight, but this baby can chop up anything! It is the ideal choice for use aginst fallen Demonchorus, all types of goats, and Savage Golems. Dante cannot swing this sword as fast as the other swords, so it's not advised to trade power for speed against the more agile enemies.
While swords and special moves are the best for starting a stylish combo, rapid fire power can keep it going between enemies. While it is fun to blast the hell out of your foes, it is not recommended you use just guns all the way through unless you wanna be stuck doing some mission for about an hour instead of 10 minutes. It's best to use a nice comination of arsenal as well as melee atacks to get the job done. Guns only have 2 levels, so it'll be next to no time before your guns start having a greater stopping power against the larger and flying demons, as well as packing more of a punch.

Handguns Custom-made by Dante himself, these twin automatics, lovingly named "Ebony and Ivory" by Dante, are specially designed to allow him to focus his magic energy through the bullets and into his targets. Their lightweight and easy sliding bridges, allow Dante a good amount of freedom to move and dodge while pumping lead into things. These are the best weapons to use with his new moves, such as Rain Storm and Twosome Time. They have medium fire power and a high rate of fire, making them a good choice to use throughout the game.
Submachine Guns These compact guns alow Dante to fire at single targets with a great deal of accuracy. These guns suck overall because they only fire low-calibur bullets. While they help to hold larger enemies at bay, their vibrating recoil makes it so Dante must hold them in front of him at all times, leaving his sides and flank quite vulnerable. He cannot perform his special gun moves with these. They are best to use against those stupid Flamebats, or if you're finger hurts from firing the other guns.
Shotgun This sawed-off double barrel shotgun blasts a large enemies in front of you, knocking all enemies back, dealing greater damage the closer they are. The gun needs to be cocked after each shot, but Dante handles that very swiftly, but not swiftly enough against agile enemies like Msiras. This gun blasts the hell out of anything the gets close, and has been known to knock goats clear across rooms. While using the shotgun, Dante keeps one of his handguns in the other hand so you can perform Twosome Time if enemies decide to piss you off.
Missile Launcher One word...yum-my! This large surface-to-air missile launcher fires a missile in a straight line to slaughter its target as well as knockin back and heavily damage against any enemies when it goes boom. Did I forget to mention yum-my?? Because of its slow rate of fire it is suggestable to flip around while it reloads to avoid enemy attack. Dante can only fire this when his feet are firmly on the ground (if you watch his feet when he fires you'll know why), and he keeps a handgun with him like with the Shotgun just in case. If you try ti fire this while airborn, Dante will on do single shots with his handgun. Oh yeah, guess what? Yum-my!

Cutlaseer These starter wepaons of Lucias are a set of short, curved blades, used in conjunction with awesome martial arts moves, can hack away enemies from both sides. These are the best to use against all types of Agonofinis, and all types of Msira.
Klyamoor These swords are the best for highly agile enemies with low vitality such as all types of spell casters, and all airborne enemies due to their ability to be swung fast.
Zambak These are a heavy set of machetes, better used to chop up tall enemies an hard shelled enemies. Because their weight means slower attacking, these puppies are best used against all kinds of goats, Savage Golems, and fallen Demonchorus.

Throwing Daggers You might wanna question where she keeps them ;), but Lucia has an endless supply of these tinyhand-carved silver ceremonial knives that can be thrown rapidly with the square button at any type of enemies, while she's standing or airborne(if airborne she twirls while throwing them). She can throw these to any of her sides at any given time, hard to knock enemies an their derriers, making these weapons a preferred choice throughout the game.
Darts These small blades can fit in between Lucia's knuckles allowing them to be thrown in small clusters that result in a firing radius similar to Dantes' Shotgun, damaging all enemies in front of Lucia. If she is high enough above her enemies, she will throw these clusters straight down on her enemy. But because of the skill required to do this, she cannot do it very quick, so be prepared to jump and dodge out of harms way while keeping decently close to your targets, because if only one hits no damage is done.
Cranky Bombs These short-ranged high density explosives can be used underwater in a dropping fashion, as well as on land in a throwing and dropping fashion. When Lucia throws them, she throws them at the ground and hops backwards. Any any that touches these will be thrown into the air. They don't affect Lucia, so feel free to set the off everywhere, so long as you're comfortable with the decreased vibility casued by the smoke of the explosion. You can throw them at targeted enemies by pressing the Left Anolog Stick in the direction of your enemy while pressing the square button. If it manages to hit the target, they will explode on impact, but if it misses, it will wait on the ground for a couple of seconds before exploding. These suck in the accuracy department, but pack one helluva whollop.
Bow Gun This can only be used underwater and has more accuracy than the Cranky Bombs. You must stop swimming and tap square rapidly in order for Lucia to start rapidly shooting short volleys of small harpoons that can stab through even the thickest skin. It's best to swim around inbetween voleys, lest Lucia become a sitting duck. These are used so little in the game, that you'll be happy to know that they are so much easier to enhance. Look below.
