India-Australia series 2001

The high flying Australians from down under have arrived and the battle lines have been truly drawn. The Aussies are truly on a roll winning everything in sight for the last 13 months, compiling a world record of 15 consecutive test wins on the trot and they hope to carry on their good run in the Indian sub-continent.The defeat they suffered when they visited here last time around is still fresh on captain Steve Waugh's mind and he intends to make amends for it .He very well knows that Australia have not won a series here for the last three decades and is thus inspired more to beat India in India he says.On the other hand his counterpart Saurav Ganguly is keen to break the Australian winning streak on our spinner friendly pitches. With both the sides taking shots at each other, this series happens to be a thriller and will be a treat for all the cricket mad crowds in the sub-continent and millions of others watching television the world over.
The Aussies have come out with their mind clear that they are going to attack the Indians with pace and they have picked up Glenn Mcgarth,Jason Gillespie,Michael Kasparowics and Damien Flemming for the cause and they are ably backed by master leg-spinner Shane Warne and off-spinner cum medium pacer Colin Milller.Their plans somewhat received a jolt when speedster Brett Lee pulled out at the last moment owing to injury. The Aussies have got a strong batting line-up with Matthew Hayden,Michael Slater,Justin Langer,Mark Waugh,Steve Waugh and wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist. The main question is does India have the bowlers to run through this strong batting line up?The biggest blow that we have suffered is the injury to Anil Kumble and we dont have any youngster to fill in his shoes surely.
The series last time out was billed as the showdown between Tendulkar and Warne and the little master had given him nightmares. So what is it this time round,Tendulkar-Warne or Tendulkar-McGarth ? Whatever it is the series should not be confined to just individuals, especially the Indians who rely so much on the little genius.Rahul Dravid,Saurav Ganguly,Laxman and openers Ramesh & Das have all to contribute if India has to upset the Australian applecart. The Aussies are a tough lot who are very vocal and tough mentally,if the Indians can match their mental toughness half the battle would be won there.
Whatever be the outcome of the series, the Indian summer seems to hold a lot for the cricket enthusasts with exciting cricket to cool down the temperatures.
