"Yami o Makumono" translates as something along the lines of "The One Who Spreads Darkness" -- a very fitting title for Yami-sama. He is a very mysterious man -- a high-ranking employee of the terrorist organization, the Nightmare Syndicate, with no name or known past. He is the SiC of Nightmare; his only superior being Albert Stargazer, whom his "undying loyalty" lies to... or so Stargazer thinks.
Yami o Makumono acts more like a demon than a human -- much more so than any other Nightmare employee. He thrives on human suffering, and seems to live simply to torment humans -- especially Kain Blueriver, his arch-enemy since killing his grandmother, Alicia. His weapon is the Blue-Red Blade; one of the only two swords in existence that is powered by mental energy (naturally, Kain is the owner of the second). However, he is also very skilled with psychic attacks, and likes to torture humans by entering their subconsciousness and either tormenting them in "dreams," or controlling them.
These powers are so strong that the first time he faces Kain, he does not even draw his psi-blade -- using only mental attacks, he beats Kain to the ground without ever even touching him.
His attitude is that of, well... a rather typical villain, really. He's cocky, he's arrogant, he's mean, and nothing really worries or frigthens him.
But who is he, really...?

Twenty years ago, Albert Stargazer, brother of Alicia Stargazer, sold his soul to the Dark Mazoku Lord, Dark-Star Dugyaradigdu. The Dark Lord offered him infinite power, the power to control the galaxy... he would help him to create the largest terrorist organization in the Universe... in return, he asked for only one thing...
Dark-Star, being the personification of fear and hatred, is powerless without a shell to live within, and so, he only asked of Stargazer to create a clone of himself. This clone is Yami o Makumono -- but the clone never got a chance to live, for it was immediately possessed and taken over by the Dark Lord... without Stargazer even knowing it. Stargazer thought the clone to be his personal servant, his most loyal servant, and together, the duo formed Nightmare... gathering the powers of yami that would eventually control the very Universe...
Yami o Makumono -- Dark-Star, that is -- had plans of his own, however. He was fixated on the destruction of the entire Universe; the ultimate goal of any Mazoku. Known as the "Prince of Darkness and Silence," Dark-Star wanted to silence all human beings... forever... beginning with the Stargazer family. He would use Albert Stargazer to gain as much power as possible... but he would definitely not serve him forever...
One woman opposed them; none other than Alicia, who had since changed her last name to "Blueriver." Together with the power of the God, Vorufied, she opposed her brother... only to pull a suicide move in battle against Yami o Makumono, hoping to kill him... but he survived.
Her battle against Nightmare was passed onto her then extremely young grandson, Kain. He grew up with an uncontrollable hatred for Yami o Makumono... who took interest in this hatred as something that would eventually force Kain to join him. As Kain grew into a young man, Yami o Makumono confronted him numerous times, trying to "baptize him into the darkness"...however, Kain had a stronger will than he had expected, and opposed him to the very end...
...And in that "very end," Kain destroyed the one who killed his grandmother. Kain destroyed Yami o Makumono; the clone that never had a chance to live, and the Dark Lord that forever controlled him like a marionette...
