AXNY
(Anime Expo New York)
Back to Main
Yay!  I just got back from three days of Anime!  It was so fun that I decided to do a page on it.  Click the green for pics, and when they load, click the little expanding thing in the bottom right corner for better resolution.  Enjoy!
Events: Well, I was able to see tons of Anime, see a fan play theme from Cowboy Beebop on saxophone, meet new friends, buy tons of stuff at cheap prices, and actually meet Yoshiyuki Tomino himself!  Click HERE for a pic.  I had a dinner-like meeting with him(after paying ten dollars to do so) and we were able to talk about Gundam and everything else.  I got his autograph, and I must say, he is one awsome guy!  He is so friendly and talented.  Definitely the highlight of the Expo.
My Most Interesting Experience: Well, since I went to the Expo as Duo (see my pic by clicking HERE) my most interesting experience was meeting Duo's fangirls.  I got glomped more than I could imagine and was intimidated when girls actually were half-screaming "kawaii".  Thanks to Oreo for inspiring me to dress up as Duo...I think.
Most Realistic Costume: Chris Grant as Kaneda, from Akira(front/back).  I swear, if it weren't for the fact that he wasn't Japanese, I'd seriously think I was face to face with Kaneda.
Most Elaborite Costume: I don't know who they are, but it's cool!
Most Like the Actual Character: Suzuka from Outlaw Star. I swear, this girl's face looks just like her.
Most *Interesting* Costume Group: Um...just look at the pic.
Coolest Costume: I think it's from Angel something-or-other
Others: Ranma   Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask    You Tell Me!     Another Duo    Spike
Question and Anwer with Yoshiyuki Tomino (Anime Expo New York 2002)
Here's what I can recall:

Q: I think I have a quesiton that is on everyone's mind.  What is the future for Gundam?
Audience: Gundam Seed!  Gundam Seed! *laughter*

Q: Do you know where we can get your autobiography "Dakara Bokyu wa..."? (I asked this)
YT: Oh, "Dakara Bokyu wa..."?  They don't publish that anymore.  But this Spring, they might publish it again in Japan.

Q: Will the Japanese version of Moblie Suit Gundam be coming to America?
YT: Well, the tracks are in very poor quality now, because they are so old.  However, it is possible that the Japanese voices may be re-done.

Q: Did you have anything to do with Gundam Wing and G Gundam?
YT: No, but I did try to give them pointers and help, but they just ignored me and did they're own thing.

Q: I saw G-Savior, and it was ok, but it wasn't the best. *laughter*  Will you be giving live action Gundam another chance?
YT: I had nothing to do with G-Savior, and know nothing about it.

Q: Why did you create Newtypes? (sorry, but I rememeber the answer more than the question!)
YT: Well, in the future, I think humans will evolve and be Newtypes.  I think we are all Newtypes but we lose that ability as we get older.  In the future, I hope you all become Newtypes! *laughter*

Q: Will your Gundam novels be published in the US?
YT: Oh...
Audience Memeber: *comes to front and shows the novel* They're already published.

Q: What makes the beam saber stop at a certain length?
Audience: Oh... *laughter*
YT: *thinking* I've actually always wondered somthing about Star Wars.  I wonder why the light sabers are so shiny, because that makes the enemy see you and dodge you easier.  I wanted my light sabers less shiny.

Q: Did you get Char Aznable's name from the French singer Char A**** (sorry, forgot the pronounciation) and why?
YT: *laughter* Yes, yes.  Well, it is very hard to make up names, so I took that one.

Q: Where did you develope all the names for characters?
YT: Well, in the future, I think people will still use some of the names we have today, and create new ones that we never hear of today.

Q: Who's your favorite character and Gundam?
YT: I can't really say.  I like them all.

Q: Do you help in the translation from Japanese to English?
YT: No, I don't know enough English to do that.

Q:
Where did you get the idea for the name "Gundam"?
YT:
Well, I wanted to use Gunboy (i think that's what he said) but it was taken and the closest translation was "Gundam".

Q:
Were the Gundams designed to actually be made and do you have one? *laugher*
YT:
Oh, I'd want to but Bandai won't fund that.

Q:
Did you expect Gundam to last this long?
YT:
Yes. (said without hesitation) *audience laughter*

Q:
Why do you think people are trying to build real Gundams in Japan, as Americans are trying to build Star Wars like ships?
YT:
I think that's a normal reaction, to try and build that.

Q:
When will Zeta and Double Zeta be coming to America?
YT
: You mean it isn't out yet? *laughter* That's no good; you have to push Bandai to bring it here. *more laughter*

Q:
What were some of the alternate endings to Zeta?
YT:
*deep in thought*   Well, it's been so long, I can't remember them. *laughter* Sorry!

And what was funny is that all through the conversation, Tomino was taking pictures of the audience and speaking some English words so the translater didn't have to say anything!
Tomino actually asked me these questions when I met him at a dinner-like thing, where fans met the creators:

Q: How did you find out about Gundam?  How long have you liked Gundam?

And when I actually showed him the manga of Mobile Suit Gundam and had him sign that too, he spent a few minutes looking at the book and being a critic to the artwork
