It was a long journey through the Forest of Shaerrawedd, called by the peasants "The Haunted Forest" and believed to be a place of great evil. But there's no evil in Shaerrawedd, they believe so just because it's a forest they didn't destroy yet, a forest where no human trace can be found. No human trace except....

...Kaer Morhen.

You heard stories about this legendary keep where witchers were trained, about the dark magic used to shape bodies and souls of young boys to change them in mutants able to fight every monster. Witchers..... They were the finest warriors but people hated them because they were so different, because they lived for hundreds of years, because they were immune to diseases. People hated them and envied them, calling them heartless golems, monsters, mutants. But as soon as they were needed, as soon as real monsters were seen somewhere nearby, people called them and they were always ready, ready to fight to save who hated them so much. Someone once said they were fighting for money not to save lifes, but they always refused to kill intelligent beings if they weren't evil, even if sometimes great amounts of gold were offered. They refused to kill elves or dryads just because people needed lumber, refused to kill dwarves just because people needed their gold mines and treasures. They weren't killers, they were witchers.
But now it's all over, elves, dryads and dwarves were killed to satisfy human greed and witchers died to satisfy the curiosity of sorcerers. They were lynched by an armed mob supported by soldiers sent by kings who believed Kaer Morhen was full of gold, by wizards who wanted to study their bodies. They're all dead, all except Gwynbleidd, "White Wolf", the last witcher alive.

Then the moon appears and a distant howl interrupts your thoughts.
In the moonlight you see an old, ruined castle standing above you against the dark sky.
You found Kaer Morhen.
