I was twelve, riding a jet plane back to the coast
New York had been
...it had been
three thousand miles, a Honda hatch back on it's last
tread
I had climbed statues in the capital
made change down Niagara
hit the Windsor tunnel frisked by the Mounties
Corn Palace in Mitchell...all those husks
and at Rushmore they could dynamite
just three feet from a presidents nose hair
The Grand Tetons and ten thousand acres that burned
nominal
Old Faithful was late
there was a cowboy with a rifle in Idaho
making target practice
and the tent didn't seem that thick
from the military surplus of Spokane
we ate chicken au-la-king in tin foil for two weeks
and the Ohme gardens of Wenatchee
made the Seattle skyline dismal
and poor
I brought twenty dollars for the trip
I was only 12
but my aunt left me on a cloud- hopper in New York
headed for the coast
and there was a young German thing
with a governess
the old lady smiled politely
as I fumbled and groped for a conversation
she was older
already 14
new to this country
and I starred at her young breast
and steered the conversation
to mother's milk
.
wouldn't she go back to the room with me
I wondered
the adventure was still to begin.
.
