| The KOM League Remembered | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The KOM League was the proving ground for over 30 young men who eventually made it to the Major Leagues. The list includes: Independence Yankees: Al Pilarcik, Jim Finigan, Lou Skizas, Bob Wiesler, Steve Kraly, Mickey Mantle, Bill Virdon, John Gabler, Don Taussig and Harry Bright. Bright also performed for the Miami, Okla. Owls. Bartlesville Oilers-Pirates: Eedward Wolfe, Roy T. Upright, Bill Pierro, Brandon Davis and Ronnie Kline. Ponca City Dodgers: Christopher Kitsos, Gale Wade and Joe Stanka. 1951 Manager, George Scherger made it as first base coach for the Cincinnati Reds of the 1970's. Blackwell Broncos: Andy Varga had pitched for the Chicago Cubs briefly before wildness exiled him to Class D baseball. Miami Blues-Owls and Eagles: Harry Bright, Seth Morehead and Jim Owens. Pittsburg Browns: Don Lenhardt, Jim Pisoni and Charlie Locke. Chanute Owls- A's and Giants: Ross Grimsley Sr., and Jake Thies. Carthage Cardinals and Cubs: Cloyd Boyer, Bob Habenitch, Bob Mahoney and Bob Speake. Carthage catcher in 1947, Eddie Vargo was a longtime National League umpire. Iola Indians: Bill Upton. Former big leaguers served in managerial capacities in the league including: Burleigh Grimes, Claude Willoughby*, Al Smith, Boyd Bartley, Jim Oglesby, Tommy Warren, Harry Craft, Tedd Gullic, Charlie Hostetler, Francis "Pug" Griffin, Hershel Martin and Charlie Bates. *Willoughby is in the front row center of the photo linked to his name. |
