Thought

is a boulder which breaks
like bone: vertical
fractures form
for the climber's wedged fist.
Not so? Watch the tumbled mass
of stone, how it breaks
into almond-halves
and you will tell yourself
that they split with perfect
syntax, where something
may rise, un-shell itself-
like a deliberate tortoise-
and stroll across white sand.
