The sunrise of the new millennium couldn't change face of the earth. Still half the world 's population survives on less than $2 a day. The growing population is using much of the sources. Every six minutes there is a birth of a new child somewhere on this earth. Are you active ? passive.
There is a vast uses of petroleum. Are you part of problem ? solution. Think again we can make a difference. The sources are limited. Use only what you need. We can do that. Its our world we can save it!
Asia
Nearly a billion
people in Asia and the Pacific-the populations of the United States
combined-live less than on $1
per day. Productive
societies need healthy children. But the poorest countries in Asia spend only $6-12
per person per year on health care. Rural
people living in fragile environments comprise the majority of the poor in Asia
and the Pacific.
Fighting poverty in Asia
Investing in women is crucial if they are to escape poverty. With a $50 loan a poor women can start a small business-and break the bonds of poverty. Learning livelihood skills can provide of their own-and hope for a better future. Promoting jobs in Asia's mega cities can help the poor work their way to better lives. Providing opportunities for the next generation of rural people in Asia and the Pacific is one of the solutions. Sending girls to school is still a challenge in much of Asia and the Pacific, home to three fourths of the world's 882 million illerate people.
"Despite
the significant improvements, the quality of life for many Asians is still among
the lowest in the world. We see poverty every day on the streets of Asia. Asia
is, in fact, home to most of the world's poor, nearly
a billion people
living on less than a dollar a day.
I believe that poverty in a world as knowledgeable and as resourceful as ours is simply unacceptable. It is not an immutable condition; public policy and action can rid us of this scourge. This is what development is all about. It is what drives development efforts.
"We can help in
reducing rural poverty in Asia and the Pacific while keeping people fed and the
environment green"
