It is interesting and important to understand that Koine is a greek dialect that means shared or common. Koine lasted from the Alexandrian period, 4th century B.C., until the 5th century A.D. Koine was spoken throughout Asia, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Sicily and the sea islands. Koine was such an all encompassing influence that Roman senators and governors had their decrees translated into this dialect . Koine is also the original language of the New Testament and its writers. The Gospel was able to spread to the known world because of Koine, the then universal language. More importantly when one considers the worldwide historical impact of Koine and the very foundations of Christian faith, Koine is most significant to contemporary man. |
