BABKHAN ELECTION'S RESULT: RUNOFF IN ORDER, OR IS IT?
The Babkhan Royal Electoral Commission announced unofficial election results for the Majlis, the democratically-elected Babkhan Legislature. A three-way tie over two seats has prompted a run-off election to be scheduled for February 27th to March 3rd. However, recent events in Menelmacar have complicated these issues, as one candidate, Ric Lyon of the Beshaz Party, has abandoned Babkha, and his election bid, to dedicate his efforts to that coup-torn country.
As of February 24, 2003 the results are as follows:
Bahram gul Kuramdin, Ardashir Khan Osmani, and Abbas Namvari will be members of the Majlis, cementing a Behsaz Party majority in that house. The run-off election, scheduled to start today, will be between those three candidates who garnered seven votes each: Ric Lyon (Behsaz), Jeffrey Leong (BLCP) and Rakesh Maziar Ackbar (Ind.) With the departure of Ric Lyon, two questions are being asked: 1.) Why should there be a run-off election? and 2.) Should the Behsaz Party be allowed to appoint a replacement for Ric Lyon?
Early projections indicated that the Behsaz party might have picked up one more seat to form an 80% control of votes in the Majlis. The party, centered around a three pronged platform of "Reform, Revival, and Renaissance" was integral in the revitalization of Babkha last year and was responsible for a very active and productive parliamentary session before this Election.
The final two seats of the five seat house, which will be the determined this week, do not have an impact on an already established Behsaz parliamentary majority, but if the Behsaz appoint a replacement candidate it may signal a shut-out of the weakened and smaller Babkhan Liberal Centre Party (BLCP) from the halls of Government. |
