The Basics
An auto-x is a race through a set course of rubber cones as fast as you can. They are usually held at parking lots or wide open paved areas. Best time wins. Hit a cone and a point is added to your time, simple as that. Here is a basic overview of an autocross course:
Autocrosses are divided into two series in the HSCC: nite and day. The day series events usually start around 8:30am. They are generally more relaxed and use a different course every time. Also day series events have 6 runs instead of the usual 3.
Nite series races are more demanding of your skills. They use the same course over an entire season and start around 7pm. You get points for both series which are added up over a season.
A few special events are held:
- Rally: a HSCC rally involves two people to a team one navigating and the other driving...however its not an offroad mudfest like the WRC. Instead you are given certain times to get to certain checkpoints. Get there too early you lose points, get there too late you lose points, get there on time...ahhh just right. Anyways the event is held at safe, and legal, speeds on public roads (yeah yeah i thought 80 was a safe speed too) and if the popo's get you, you are automatically disqualified! Think of the old arcade game Cruisin' USA, mixed with a dash of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, except more gay.
- Bele Chere: They close off Charlotte Street in Asheville for autocross, biggest event of the season.
- NCAC: The North Carolina Autocross Championship is a divisional playoff of the best racers in NC. Members from the Tarheel, Triad, and HSCC clubs, among others, are all eligible to compete in a NCAC sanctioned race. Finish 1st-6th in any of these to receive points towards the NCAC trophy. Races are scattered all over NC, but for the 2004 season a two day event will be held where everyone will duke it out at once.
