German Hot Dish

2 lbs hamburger
5 potatoes (diced)
1 large jar sauerkraut
1/2 cup rice
1/4 onion
salt and pepper
2 tbsp. shortening

Brown hamburger with onion, salt and pepper. Add diced potatoes, sauerkraut, rice, shortening. Stir. Add just enough water to cover mixture. Bring to a boil and then turn down to simmer. Cover pot with lid; make sure lid is on tight. Stir 3 to 4 times during cooking. Cooking time about 45 to 60 minutes. Water will evaporate.
Good with ketchup and buttered bread!
