About Our Council
Shiprock Council 9200 is 'The First Native American Council in the USA', and Shiprock, New Mexico is the largest town on the Navajo Reservation.  Shiprock Council 9200 was founded in 1986 through the efforts of the Rev. Chuck Cichanowicz O.F.M. and Mr. Elmer C. Yazzie Sr.  Once upon a time, a $50 donation
to Christ the King Parish, from the Knights of Columbus San Juan Council 3448 in Farmington, NM,  resulted in Mr. Yazzie asking the age old question, "Who Are the Knights of Columbus?"  Well, Father Chuck explained the answer to Elmer and the rest, as they say, is history.  View the history of our council.

Shiprock Council 9200 is named after the Shiprock Pinnacle, an ancient volcanic plug and the town of Shiprock.  The pinnacle is a sacred site to the Navajo people who call it 'Tse' Bit' Ai', which means 'rock with wings'.  This unique geologic formation dominates the local area and is also incorporated in the council logo.
The other symbols in the logo include the traditional Navajo 'yei' or deity, and the New Mexico Pueblo 'zia', a circle with 3 lines that radiate out in the 4 cardinal directions.

The Shiprock Council works closely with Christ The King Parish in Shiprock, providing volunteer services, and funds for various projects.  Shiprock Council 9200 has 5 of the original Knights still active in the council: Chester Chase, Herman Cleveland, Leonard Hilt, David E. Patterson Sr. and Elmer C. Yazzie Sr. There are over  30 active Knights in Shiprock Council 9200.  The monthly Shiprock Council 9200 Newsletter reaches coast to coast, with members residing as far west as California and as far east as Maryland.
