What’s New with the Knights of Columbus?

The Knights monthly newsletter to keep informed on what’s happening in our council #7794.

Don’t forget to check out our website. It’s just in the beginning stages right now but you’ll be able to check out all the newsletters, a link to different Knights of Columbus sites and photos of the K of C in action. We’re going to try to get pictures of all of the events going on and hopefully, within the next few months, we’ll have a nice photo gallery set up so everyone can see what we’re doing.

If you have any questions, concerns and / or would like to have something mentioned in our newsletter, please feel free to get on our website to contact us or send a letter to me: Jeff DeSantis

Normally at this time of year we would be saying "BRRRR, it’s cold," and even though we’re not, it’s still Christmas time. So, take some time off from that Christmas rush and stop by St. Mary’s church hall on Sunday,

December 16 to see Santa at the Knights of Columbus annual Christmas party. The festivities start at Noon with dinner. There will be a meat platter provided and please bring a covered dish to pass. Following dinner (12:40), Santa will stop by to visit with the children and hand out presents. Parents, if you wish your children to receive a present, please bring a gift with you and give it to one of the officers.

The final drawing for the 225 raffle will be held at the party also. There will

be: 1 - $500.00, 5 - $100.00, 3 - $50.00, 10 - $25.00 drawings held. We’ve been drawing winners once a week since October and here are all of the lucky winners:

Larrivey

10/14/01 - Leo Lalonde, Donna Kraeger, Roy Albbright

10/21/01 - Tim Gordon, Skip Fruin, Walt Tyson

10/28/01 - JJ Potter Jr., Tim Gordon, Bob Wilson

The Thanksgiving Turkey baskets were a HUGE success. The K of C delivered 45 dinners to some of our friends and neighbors in the area, who for whatever reasons are unfortunate this holiday season. What really made this a success, wasn’t just the delivery of the dinners but we had some turkeys donated to us to give to the less fortunate. Then in turn, we received thank you cards and donations from these families who we helped. All we would like to say is " we’re glad we could help."

Now that everybody is in the giving mood, we’re going to have a Ham Basket delivery for Christmas on Saturday, December 22. If you would like to volunteer your time or if you know of a family in need, please contact Pete Kraeger.

It’s basketball season and everyone wants to be able to be like Michael Jordan and here’s your chance. On Saturday, January 12, the Knights of Columbus is going to sponsor the annual Free Throw Shoot for kids of all ages, at South Lewis High School. There are going to be trophies for the

winners in each age bracket. If you win here, then you really get to show your stuff at the district shoot. Registration forms will be made available at the South Lewis Elementary schools and High school, or you can contact one of the officers. GOOD LUCK to all of you!

Don’t like basketball, OK, we’ve got some bowling events coming up. In March, the K of C is going to have their annual day at the lanes. Each year all the local area council’s get together and have a day filled with bowling and fun. More information will be available as we get closer to March.

For all of you heavy duty bowlers out there, the Knights of Columbus International Bowling Assoc. will have their 77th annual Men’s & 7th annual Women’s Tournament held in Syracuse this year.

The C & B ticket sales went good this year. Our council made their quota by selling 98 books, which isn’t bad considering there’s only 77 members. The only thing is, 33 members either sold or purchased these books and that’s less then half. We all get hit up to buy this and to buy that, where does it stop? You’re the only one who can make that decision and remember, we’re going to be pushing these again next year and a book of 12 is only $6.00.

Have you ever watched the cooking channel and just had your mouth water from some of those recipes or have gone to a friends house for dinner and couldn’t get enough of their apple pie? I think we’ve all had that experience at one time or another, so what we were looking at doing is getting a little recipe corner going in our newsletter. If you have any recipes you would like to share with us, please write me, Jeff DeSantis or hop on our website.

Here are a few things passed on by our Grand Knight, District Deputy, Chaplain & Assoc. Chaplain.

The 4th degree meeting that was held on December 15 went very well. The main topic was about the Heroes Fund, for all of the World Trade Center disaster victims.

There will be a Grand Knight district meeting on Friday January 25th at the Sacred Heart Church, in Watertown.

If you are a 2nd degree, and would like to be a 3rd , there will be a 3rd degree held on May 4th. Contact Stephen Kraeger @ 348 - 4246 or Ron Gordon @ 376 - 3984.

Membership. That’s always going to be a hot topic. So far this year, we’ve only had one applicant accepted. Well, I guess you could say "one is better then none but two’s better." In the Membership Campaign Newsletter, the K of C publishes, there are a few incentives: "Recruiters that celebrate the benefits of membership, become eligible to receive 500 Recruitment Reward Points for each new or readmitted member recruited between January 1 to June 30, 2002. These points are redeemable for Knights of Columbus merchandise available through the Supreme Council Supply Department. Recruiters will also be entered into Bi-Monthly drawings for the months at they are recruitment active. As an added bonus, recruiters of new or readmitted members between January 1 to June 30, 2002will be entered into a drawing for one of five family vacations to Universal Studios, Orlando.

Father Pascal and Msgr. Whitmore would like to remind us that confessions will be held at St. Martin’s on Saturday, December 15th and at St. Mary’s on Saturday, December 22nd prior to 4:00 Mass.

Just a thought from the council, winter is here and we know there’s going to be snow, so if you happen to be walking by the church grounds on you way to shovel out you Grandparents driveway or you’re driving by after plowing out a parking lot don’t forget about Fr. & Msgr. If you could shovel off the steps or drop the plow in front of the church so the Parishioners don’t have to walk in the snow, that would be a big, big help. Remember, if Father Pascal or Msgr. Whitmore were our Dads, you would be shoveling them out, with no questions asked.
