Grand Knight’s Message October 2004
by Norvel Cason
We are beginning our annual Turkey Raffle. As we have done
in the past, we raffle off several turkeys and the winners can pick up the
turkeys at Roche Brothers. The proceeds from this raffle generally go to pay for
our senior dinner that we hold in
May of each year. I am hopeful that each member of the council will participate
in the raffle this year and purchase as many tickets as possible to ensure
success. Our chairperson may
need someone to volunteer to help.
Membership
Drive
We will be conducting a membership drive during the month
of October. We would like to increase our membership with men of faith. Men who
practice their faith are excellent candidates for the Knights of Columbus. If
you see someone at church or at Confession or if it is a person you know to be
of good character and practices Catholicity in agreement with the Holy Mother
Church, ask him to consider joining. The best way to get someone to join is to
ask. Sometimes it may require asking a potential member more than once.
You may plant the seed by asking several times before you get someone to
agree to be a member of the Knights. Promote the benefits of the Knights. This
may be especially good for candidates who have young families.
During our October Blitz, let’s get a few good Catholic men to join our
council and keep it vibrant and growing.
Vivat Jesus,
Norvel
Cason

Columbus
Day Celebration
The Fall River
Diocese will officially end its Centennial Year observances on Columbus Day,
Monday, October 11th, on the grounds of LaSalette National Shrine in Attleboro.
The Celebration
will open with a banner procession with representatives from parishes, diocesan
organizations, and schools. The
Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary will be prayed in different languages.
Bishop Coleman will preside the Eucharistic Procession and Benediction,
with interludes of singing from a 150-member choir.
The Diocese has
received an Apostolic Blessing for the event from Our Holy Father Pope John Paul
II. It is hoped that many Knights
of Columbus will attend on this Holiday afternoon to render Our Blessed Mother
the honor of praying the Rosary for peace in the world.
Parish
Picnic
A Giant Thank you
to all the knights who contributed to the success of our Parish Picnic. We had
approximately 108 people to attend – more would have attended I am told but it
was make up day for the rain out of the prior day’s soccer game. In any event,
it was a joyous occasion. The kids were tumbling in the moon
walk and the train ride was a monumental hit with the small ones and even
some of the big ones. There were volley ball players, horse shoe playing,
Jane’s face painting, EMTs and our own live DJ Paul Schleicher with his multi
megawatt system.
Leo Schleicher
was selling the 50/50 raffle
tickets of which Jan Meier won and
the little ones enjoyed winning the seven door prizes which consisted of gift
certificates from Blockbuster Video.
We had several
people grilling and the food was excellent. We enjoyed a menu of
fresh corn, grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs - chips, tonic and a
variety of desserts.
Again, a giant thank you to all those who found time to help make this annual event a success.

Two
More Charity Grants
By Norm
Corriveau
Thanks to the
Tootsie-Roll efforts of our Brother Knights in Massachusetts,
two young children of the Trent Bartlett family in Mansfield are the
recipients of two Charity Funds grants of $4000.00 each for hearing aids, from
our State Office K of C.
GK Norvel Cason
and PGK Norm Corriveau of St. Mary’s Council 11690 presented the two checks to the family on Sunday, September
5, 2004. Trent Bartlett now wants
to join our St. Mary’s Council of Knights of Columbus.
Thanks to all who participate in our annual Tootsie-Roll Charity Drive.

Tootsie
Roll Drive
Again we are at
the time of year which requires us to solicit for tootsie roll donations. As
many of you know, the revenue generated from this drive goes to help kids who
are challenged. This council has contributed approximately fourteen thousand
dollars to improve the lives of kids who are challenged in some way.
In order for the
contributions to continue, we are asking each member of the council who is
capable of standing for a few hours to volunteer to help at various business
establishments. If no one has asked you to help, call the Grand Knight (222
9587) and he will see to it that you are assigned a location. It would be very
helpful if some could volunteer for a few multiple hour shifts for this cause.
Our tootsie roll drive will take place October 1st through October 3rd this year
at local businesses and on October 9th and 10th at the Church. We currently do
not have enough volunteers so let’s plan on raising at least the amount we
raised last year. So volunteers please step up and lets get this job done.
New

Brother Trent is now looking forward to getting involved in our Columbian
activities.

“Year
of the Eucharist”
Our Holy Father,
Pope John Paul II, announced that
the Catholic Church will observe a “Year of the Eucharist”,
starting on Oct. 10, 2004 and
ending with the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in the Vatican in October
2005.
“Christ, ‘the
Living Bread which came down from heaven’ is the only one who can satisfy man’s hunger at all times
and in all parts of the earth”, he said.
“In the
Eucharist, Christ gives His Body and His Blood for the life of humanity.
And those who nourish themselves worthily at His table
become living instruments of His presence of love, mercy, and peace”,
said the Pope.
