Grand Knight’s Message                                           December 2003
by Norm Corriveau

We are reminded to keep Christ in Christmas.   The Wise Men followed the Star to find the Christ Child.  Our guiding star to Christ is also our Order’s major principle: Charity.  Jesus taught us to share and to reach out to others, sometimes forgetting our own agenda.  In that spirit of charity, let us agree to remain united whether we can sometimes disagree on certain issues at a meeting.  In praying the “Our Father”, we promise to be forgiving.

Thanks to all the Knights who got involved in our Membership Drive.  It is really encouraging and inspiring to see so many come forward and promote membership in our Fraternal Order.

Youth Activities:

As someone reminded me, we do need to do more for the children of our Council.  We have 32 members with a total of 67 children under the age of 15 years old.  Last year at this time, we were surprisingly disappointed to have only 8 children present at our Christmas Social:  so much had gone into the planning of this Holiday event.

We now need to know what the parents would like to see in the future for more youth socialization.  I am inviting all interested parents to talk to me about this issue, so that we can organize a committee for planning future youth activities.  It can be done if you really want this.

Dues for Year 2004:

Our annual dues for the Council 11690 are $30 per year or $7.50 per quarter.  You can make your check payable to:  St. Mary’s K of C.  Glenn Ringer, our Financial Secretary, will hand you your new membership card upon receipt of dues, starting at the December 10th business meeting.

Pizza Party:

We will take time following our business meeting on December 10th to socialize and express our Christmas wishes to each other.  We will do this with a Pizza Party.  Hope you can join us.

Fraternal Survey:

Our Supreme Council is requesting that we complete a worksheet that reports what each individual K of C member has contributed in hours of volunteer service throughout the year 2003.  This worksheet is found at the bottom of page 3 of this newsletter.  Please complete this form, detach it, and get it to me somehow, no later than January 14th.  Please remain anonymous.

These hours of service are compiled by our Council and sent to the Supreme Council Office who, in turn, report the total number in hours of volunteer service worldwide.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!

Vivat Jesus,

Norm Corriveau

Special Recognition

For October 2003

The following were recognized at the November 12, 2003 business meeting for their outstanding service:

Knight of the Month                                    Family of the Month

D onald Thibeault                                    The John Golden Family

Donald Thibeault receives Knight of the month award for October 2003. Norvel Cason receives certificate of merit for chairing the Tootsie Roll Charity Drive. From left to right: Donald Thibeault, GK Norm Corriveau and DGK Norvel Cason.

Reporting on the Council’s Memorial Mass

Our Council 11690 gathered together at the 8:00 AM Mass on Sunday, Nov. 2nd, All Souls’ Day, to remember our deceased Knights.  We were joined by the Fourth Degree Cardinal O’Connell Assembly with an Honor Guard of 14 Sir Knights, who celebrated their 710th Consecutive Monthly Mass and Holy Communion

The breakfast that followed took place at The Carriage House of Easton, with 60 people in attendance.  GK Norm Corriveau took this opportunity of faith and fraternity to present two awards:  1) the October Knight of the Month Award to Donald Thibeault, our Director of Church Activities; and 2) a Certificate of Merit to our DGK Norvel Cason for his outstanding efforts in running a very successful Tootsie-Roll Drive, which cleared $4221.17 for our Massachusetts Charity Fund.

Unannounced Event

On Saturday, Nov. 1st, our Council served a Spaghetti Dinner for the Norton Youth Sports Award Night.  This event was not brought up at any K of C meeting; it was decided as a fund-raiser for the Council only after the October 8th meeting.  The dinner went very well, thanks to the many members who responded so generously on a short 4-day notice.  Besides increasing our treasury by a sum of over $600, it proved to be a great community activity for our youth.

Parish Clean-up

It was indeed very inspiring to see so many Knights come out so early on a cold Saturday morning to help clean around the church, the rectory, and the Parish Center.  The job got done in very little time, thanks to Paul Schleicher and Kevin Weber for providing the more efficient equipment.

º    at 5:00 PM  for those delivering the meal and gifts to The Samaritan House.

Fourth Degree News

The Cardinal O’Connell Assembly started its annual lottery last month.  The cost of the lottery is $50 and can be paid in full by check or $5 monthly payments for 10 months.  For all those who would like to join or have any questions, please see Norm Corriveau or Paul Grenier.

The Assembly will celebrate its 711th Monthly Corporate Mass at 9:00 AM at St. Casimir’s Church in Brockton.  The breakfast will follow at the George’s Café in Brockton.  I would like to thank all brother knights that participated in last months Corporate Mass at St. Mary’s and the breakfast that followed at the Carriage House.  The Mass was dedicated to all our deceased members of the Knights of Columbus.

It’s never too early to consider joining the Cardinal O’Connell Assembly.  The Assembly concentrates on its Corporate Monthly Masses, Honor Guards at Masses, Wakes, and Patriotic events.  For all those who would like to join or have any questions, please see Norm Corriveau or Paul Grenier.  The exemplification of the Fourth Degree is generally held in June.

As we prepare for the season of Advent, lets remember to “Keep Christ in Christmas” in all our daily activity, and to take the time to enjoy each moment, during this busy and often-chaotic holiday season.  On behalf of the Cardinal O’Connell Assembly, I wish all brother knights, family and friends a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our lottery winners for November 2003 are:

 # 15 - Ralph Nee of Brockton

 # 31 - Harry Bates of Brockton
