Grand
Knight’s Message
November
2003
by
Norm Corriveau
Knighthood requires
boldness; boldness to SERVE, as Jesus taught us.
Our knighthood also requires a good deal of teamwork in getting
our Service Program underway. As
Knights for Christ, we can make a difference where we are planted.
It
is very noticeable that some of our Council sheepishly look the other way when
asked to help out. Some others give
us a steady flow of excuses, which reminds me of what Jesus spoke about in Luke
14: 16-24.
But,
we are very proud of our Knights who came out to work many hours in collecting
for the 2003 Charity Drive. These
Knights “made time” in their hectic family commitments to render service.
Thanks for your generosity. This
year, we surpassed last year’s collection by almost $1300.
Good work!
We
also congratulate those Knights and their families who joined us on Columbus Day
to “Celebrate Faith, Family, and Fraternity” in praying together the Living
Rosary.
We
had to drop out of the Chartley Parade of Sunday, October 26th,
mainly due to lack of participants for our large patriotic float.
Maybe next year?
On
Sunday, November 2nd, we will celebrate our Annual Corporate Memorial
Mass at 8:00 AM. The Cardinal
O’Connell Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights will join us with their colorful
Honor Guard. Afterwards, our
Communion-Breakfast will take place at The Carriage House of Easton,
located on Route 138, just 1 mile north of the Route 106 intersection.
The
meeting we hold on the first Wednesday of each month is not just for Officers of
the Council. This is an informal
meeting where each member has a “say” in planning future activities for the
Council. It involves brainstorming
to increase activity practicality and participation. We will now call it Activities-Planning Meeting.
This meeting will start at 8:00 PM at the Parish Center and should
last no more than one hour.
Our
Membership Drive will host 2 Informational Open Houses:
one on Sunday, Nov. 9th at 2 :00 PM, and the other on
Thursday, Nov. 13th at 6:30 PM.
We hope you can join us for added support.
Better still, recruit a potential candidate for membership.
Wives and children are invited to attend, to better learn that we are
family-oriented.
Jim
McEnaney is heading our Christmas fundraiser.
Please offer your services in helping him out.
Thanksgiving Day is a special day, set aside to count our many blessings
and to give our sincere gratitude to our loving Lord.
Let us celebrate our Faith with our Families in giving Him THANKS.
Vivat Jesus,
Norm
Corriveau
Special Recognition
For September 2003
The
following were recognized at the October 8, 2003 business meeting for their
outstanding service:
Knight
of the Month
PGK Paul Grenier
Family
of the Month
The Peter Pino Family
At the business meeting of October 8th, a
motion was made and seconded to “help pay for a commercial dishwasher for St.
Mary’s Parish Center kitchen”, using $1000 from our Building Fund Savings.
The
Parish Center kitchen now has a new stove and convection oven, paid by St.
Mary’s Parish. We can now run
numerous meal functions. The
commercial dishwasher would provide better working conditions as well as clean
and sanitized china and silverware, for many years to come.
Please join our discussion of this motion for a very important vote at
our next business meeting of Nov. 12th.
Our Annual Living Rosary took place at 7 PM on Columbus
Day at the Parish Center. About 46
people participated, of which 18 were children under 16 years old.
Hooray for the Family Rosary in the Year of the Rosary!
Father
Bob headed the Rosary, GK Norm Corriveau described each of the Mysteries of
Light before each decade, and Donald Thibeault lit each candle in front of the
person saying the “Hail Mary”. A
Knight in robe stood at the start of each decade, intoning the “Our Father”.
The 17 tables were arranged in the shape of a Rosary.
When all the candles were lit by the end of the Rosary, it was a very
beautiful sight in front of the statue of Our Blessed Mother.
Thanks
and congratulations to all who participated!
This year’s Tootsie-Roll Drive for charity surpassed
last year’s collection by almost $1300. On
Friday, Oct. 24th at the Fall River Diocesan Charity Dinner, GK Norm
Corriveau and DGK Norvel Cason together presented our check of $4221.17 to the
Mass. State Council for our contribution. That
evening, the checks presented by various Councils totaled over $42,000.
Thanks
to all of you who made time to volunteer in this charitable effort.
Your presence at the stores and Masses was well appreciated by the people
of Norton and Mansfield. Thanks
especially to DGK Norvel Cason for all the hours he spent in organizing and
running around to different locations, as well as obtaining permission from
store managers.
Our Council 11690 is celebrating its Annual Memorial
Mass for deceased Knights at the 8 AM Mass on Sunday, November 2nd.
The Cardinal O’Connell Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights will join us
in celebrating their 710th consecutive Monthly Mass, with a colorful
Honor Guard. Please join us in this
large family of Knights on All Souls’ Day.
A
Communion-Breakfast will follow at The Carriage House of Easton, located
on Route 138 in South Easton, just 1 mile north of the Route 106 intersection.
Our annual Turkey Raffle is a good fund-raiser to
support some of our Program Activities. We
are deeply grateful to Roche Bros.in Norton for donating 15 gift certificates
towards their beautiful Thanksgiving turkeys.
We can help advertise for them by going out and selling tickets.
The
15 drawings will take place immediately after our next business meeting of
November 12th. Please
help us by bringing in all stubs and money before the meeting starts.
For those not attending, please call Ed Groden at 508-285-7403 or Norm
Corriveau at 508-285-3755 to make any pick-up arrangement.
We scheduled two Informational Open-Houses in November
for families that want to learn more about our Order of Catholics and of its
multiple benefits.

Please
use your apostolic charm in inviting area families (wives & children
included) to come and see what we are all about. Christ is counting on you, and so are we.
On the first Wednesday of each month, we hold an
informal meeting of brainstorming to plan upcoming activities for our Council.
This meeting is open to all and every member, starting at 8 PM in the
Parish Center.
We
are especially interested in having the fathers of young children, so that we
can plan a variety of activities for children as well.
We need to increase their attendance in youth events.

The Cardinal O’Connell Assembly starts its annual
lottery this month. The cost of the
lottery is $50 and can be paid in full by check or $5 monthly payments for 10
months. For all those who would
like to join or have any questions, please see Norm Corriveau or Paul Grenier.
The
Assembly will celebrate its 710th Monthly Corporate Mass at 8:00 AM
at our own St. Mary’s Church in Norton. Please
join both our Council and our Assembly in celebrating not only our 710th
consecutive Mass, but also our Council’s Memorial Mass.
Let us show our support for our deceased members and their families by
participating in the celebration of the Mass.
The breakfast will follow at the Carriage House of Easton, located on
Route 138.
It’s
never too early to consider joining the Cardinal O’Connell Assembly.
The Assembly concentrates on its Corporate Monthly Masses, Honor Guards
at Masses, Wakes, and Patriotic events. For
all those who would like to join or have any questions, please see Norm
Corriveau or Paul Grenier. The
exemplification of the Fourth Degree is generally held in June.
Congratulations!
We welcome with open arms two new members to our Family,
Council 11690, who made their First and Second Degrees in the Knights of
Columbus on Tuesday, October 28, 2003. They
are Michael Rota of 2 Goldenwood Drive in Norton, and Kevin Weber of 55 South
Worcester St. in Norton.
The two ceremonies were held at the Middleboro K of C
Hall. Twenty candidates made their
First Degree, and twenty-five Knights made their Second Degree.
It was indeed very inspirational, even for the old-timers.
Those of our Council 11690 who supported these new Knights by their
presence were: DD Tony Medeiros, GK
Norm Corriveau, SK Frank McLaughlin, SK Leo Schleicher, SK Paul Schleicher, Bob
Smith, and Henry Comerford.
We
also welcome Robert Dorney of Mansfield who is transferring from the Stoughton
Council.
Parish
Cleanup
We have set aside Saturday, November 15th, to
clean the grounds of the church, the rectory, and the parish center,
starting at 7:30 AM. Please
bring your rakes for gathering the fallen leaves, and bring your smiles for some
good fraternalism. We’ll start at
the church.
SK Joe Daley underwent surgery on Tuesday, October 21st
for a hip replacement. On Friday,
Oct. 24th, he was moved to Epoch Senior Living on Route 140 in Norton
to undergo treatments in his rehabilitation.
He would greatly appreciate your prayers and hearing from you.
SK
Donald Spencer is now improving with the support of your prayers.
The serious wound that was afflicting him for so many months is now
healing. He appreciates your
support and prayers.
Dan
Dennis is still having problems with his eyesight. He also needs the support of your prayers.
Bob Kellner has sold his house in Norton, has moved to
Florida, and wants to stay in our Council 11690. He is exceptionally proud to be a Charter Member of Council
11690. We thank him sincerely for
his loyalty and good works. We miss
him very much for helping in preparing meals, for selling Raffle tickets, and
for serving at daily Mass. His new
address is: 253 Salem Ave, Palm
Harbor, FL 34684-1451.

On Nov. 8-9th, our council will be conducting
a membership drive which will include speakers and members at all the Masses.
This will be followed by an Open House on Sunday afternoon from 2 PM to 4
PM at the Parish Center.
I
would like every Brother Knight to ask themselves, “Who can I ask to become a Knight of Columbus?”
Surely, there is a friend, a neighbor, or a relative that you might
approach. Even if they live in a
different area, encourage them to
take up membership in their own area.
While
we’re on the subject, it is also a good time for us to examine our own reasons
for joining the Knights of Columbus. Since
joining the K of C, has something
changed? Is it not what you
expected it to be? Is it more than
you expected? All of us can fall
into our daily routine and make an excuse for this or that. Take a minute and re-examine the ideals of Columbianism:
Charity, Unity,
Fraternity, and Patriotism. Ask
yourself how these ideals fit into your life, and how you fit into them. Make this Drive a memorable one:
ask someone to join. And,
search your own heart.
