Grand
Knight’s Message
October
2003
by
Norm Corriveau
It was overwhelming to witness the kind of fraternal
teamwork from our 24 Knights who came forward to help out with St. Mary’s
Parish Picnic. The picnic was fun,
but I took great joy in the generous service of our Knights.
This was indeed an excellent display of “reaching out to others” for
the eyes of our many youngsters present. “Jesus
lives!”
October
is the Month of the Rosary in the Year of the Rosary. Our Holy Father has asked us to pray the Rosary in these
difficult times all around the world. Hopefully,
we have taught our children to pray the Rosary.
On Monday, October 13th, Columbus Day and the 86th
Anniversary of the final apparition of Our Blessed Mother at Fatima,
we are having a Living Rosary at 7 PM at the Parish Center.
We hope to see all of you there with your family to heed Our Blessed
Mother’s request to pray the Rosary. Without
Mary, we will lose our way.
October
is indeed our busy month. DGK
Norvel Cason has been calling our members to work on the Tootsie-Roll Drive on
the first weekend of October. Be
generous with your time. Our
Council 11690 has helped two needy families in Norton by obtaining two grants of
$7000 and $4000 from the Mass. State Council in the past 5 months for a van
conversion (10-year old Matt Darling) and for 2 hearing aids (9-year old Rachael
Weber). We need to show our
appreciation.
Our
Annual Turkey Raffle starts on Oct.
8th as a needed fund-raiser. Roche
Bros have come forward again in donating 15 turkeys. The drawing will take place at the business meeting of Nov.
12th. Please help us in
selling tickets. Ed Groden, our
Council Director, is organizing the Raffle.
On
Sunday, October 26th, we plan on repeating last year’s Patriotic
Float for the Annual Chartley Parade. John
Kilroy, our Community Director, is coordinating this event.
Please join us in the parade.
We need to plan our strategies in recruiting new members.
Bob Smith is our Membership Director;
he will be receiving supplies from the Supreme Council in organizing the
Membership Drive. We plan on having two informational Open-House events in
mid-November for the families you have invited.
One strategy is to introduce yourself to the families who attend Mass on
the weekends; they are part of our
Parish Family.
Vivat
Jesus,
Norm Corriveau
Recognition
The
following were recognized at the September 10, 2003 business meeting for their
outstanding service:
Knight of the
Month
Family of the Month
Jack
Camara
The Gregoire Desrochers Family
Our Parish Picnic of Sunday, Sept.14th, saw
about 170 in attendance (of which 48 were children under 13 years old).
Our prayers were indeed answered: NO
RAIN, in spite of the weather predictions for rain.
The
cooks did an excellent job. We had
plenty of food and drinks. The kids
(young & old) enjoyed the numerous train rides; we had two moonwalks for the energetic ones.
But most of all, the kids delighted in the face-painting by our own
parishioner, Jane Steeves. The
adults took their best shot at horseshoes and at volleyball.
A
sincere thanks goes to our Church Activities Director, Donald Thibeault,
for his wholehearted dedication and leadership. We had 24 Knights present, to lend a helping hand in the
numerous tasks. Thanks,
everybody!
Ryan McAuliffe of Norton has been declared the
International Champion by the Knights of Columbus in the 2003 Free Throw
Basketball Competition. He took
first place after registering the highest score among results from the United
States and the Canadian Provinces. Over
180,000 young men and women participated in this year’s competition.
The
Knights of Columbus trophy was presented to Ryan McAuliffe by the Massachusetts
State Deputy Thomas M. Ledbetter and by Grand Knight Norm Corriveau of St.
Mary’s Council 11690 of Norton, following
the ceremony of installing K of C State Officers in Massachusetts.
The
Knights of Columbus conduct the Free Throw Championship in basketball each year
throughout the United States and Canada for boys and girls 10 – 14 years old.
The results from the State and Provincial contests are forwarded to the K
of C Supreme Council office in New Haven, CT, where the international winner is
determined.

Ryan McAuliffe of Norton holds his Free Throw Championship Trophy, presented by Massachusetts State Deputy Thomas M. Ledbetter. Ryan poses with Mom, Dad, brother Chad, and Norm Corriveau, Grand Knight of St. Mary's Council 11690 of Norton.
The Assembly’s Installation of Officers was held on
Sat., September 13th at St. Mary’s Church in Norton, immediately
following the 5:30 PM Mass. FDD
Paul Beaton and his secretary FDD Alfred O’Connor officiated at the
installation: Paul Grenier was
installed as Faithful Navigator and Norm Corriveau as Faithful Admiral.
The
dinner that followed was served by Young’s Catering from Seekonk at the Parish
Center. PFN Skip Graziano of
Brockton won the grand prize of $1000
in the final drawing of our lottery. The
new lottery drawings will resume in November.
The
Cardinal O’Connell Assembly will celebrate its 709th Monthly
Corporate Mass at the 7:45 AM Mass of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Bridgewater.
Breakfast will be held at The Carriage House of Easton.
At this occasion, we will present our vocation award of $500 to
seminarian Matthew Westcott who is studying at St. John’s Seminary in
Brighton, MA.
Let us remember our Brother Knights and their family
members who are experiencing a sickness or physical ailment.
·
SK Donald Spencer is suffering from a
serious wound.
·
DD Arthur Whittemore of Raynham is
recovering from a stroke.
·
SK Joe Daley is suffering while waiting for
a hip surgery.
·
SK Donald Thibeault and his wife Gertrude
in their ailments.

appendectomy.
Each year, our Council 11690 conducts a Tootsie-Roll
Drive to benefit various charitable causes for children with handicaps.
Each year, the Massachusetts State Council has answered generously to our
applications for grants: just
recently, $7000 in May 2003 for a van conversion (boy in a wheelchair),
and $4000 in August 2003 for 2
hearing aids.
This
has been possible because of our volunteers who stand outside business
establishments and solicit donations while handing out Tootsie-Rolls.
We are in need of more volunteers to fill in vacant slots at different
stores in Norton and Mansfield on the first weekend of October.
If you are able to help, please e-mail me at [email protected] or phone me
at 508-222-9587.
October is the Month of the Holy Rosary, in this “The
year of the Rosary”, as proclaimed by Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II.
We are urged to contemplate Christ at “the school of
Mary”. He added the five
Mysteries of Light to enhance our Discipleship to Christ.
In
each of the six apparitions at Fatima, Mary insisted on the recitation of the
Rosary. She made her appearances
with the Rosary dangling from her clasped hands.
In the last apparition of October 13, 1917, Lucy asked:
“Who are you, and what do you want?”
Our Lady replied: “I am the Lady of the Rosary, and I have come to warn
the faithful to amend their lives and to ask pardon for their sins.
They must not continue to offend Our Lord Who already is so deeply
offended. They must say the
Rosary.”
By
praying the Rosary, untold blessings have been showered upon mankind.
Mary has again come to save mankind from the evils that overwhelm us; she
will guide us on the right path to eternal joy with our true Lover.
The Family Rosary is a very practical way to strengthen family life and
is a fountain of great blessings for the family.
Our Installation of Officers took place on Sunday, Sept.
28th in St. Mary’s Church. Our
State Secretary Richard Guerriero and his wife Patricia were present, as well as
FDD Robert Mathieu and his wife Claire, and FDD Michael O’Leary.
We
are sincerely grateful to the Installation Team: our own District Deputy PGK Tony Medeiros, our District
Warden PGK Tom Castello, and PGK Tom Jarbeau as Guard. The Cardinal O’Connell Assembly provided an honor guard for
the ceremony in the persons of SK John Drane and SK Fred Kippenhan.
After
the installation, we proceeded to the K of C Hall of Easton’s Council 238 on
Route 106. The Deluxe Buffet Dinner
was prepared and put on by The Carriage House of Easton. We thank the members of Council 238 for the use of their
hall, and especially SK Gary Sirois who cooked us a lavish meal.
PGK
Paul Grenier presented the Family of the Year Award to The Peter Pino Family,
and the Knight of the Year Award to Frank McLaughlin.
GK
Norm Corriveau presented the PGK Plaque to Paul Grenier.
State
Secretary Richard Guerriero presented the Columbian Award for 2002-2003 to PGK
Paul Grenier
We
ended with the presentation of the Mass. State Council Public Safety Award to
Police Officer Michael McKenney of Norton.
State Secretary Richard Guerriero made the presentation in the presence
of Police Chief Bruce Finch of Norton, FDD Robert Mathieu, DD Tony Medeiros, GK
Norm Corriveau, and Frank McLaughlin who promoted the award.
Our
sincere gratitude to all present for their support and especially to PGK Tom
Jarbeau who performed so professionally as MC for the evening.

If any member would like to order a Council 11690 jacket
