Grand
Knight’s Message
September
2003
by
Norm Corriveau
The month of August was clearly marked with good fraternalism.
On August 5th, some
of us joined the Seminarians of the Fall River Diocese in celebrating their Rite
of Candidacy with our newly ordained Bishop George W. Coleman at St. Julie’s
Church in North Dartmouth. Our
Brother Knight Bill Sylvia completed his studies at Providence College and will
be spending a year of Spirituality and Theology in Northampton, Pennsylvania.
On August 10th, many
families got together in tailgating at McCoy Stadium, enjoying a great baseball game,
and meeting the players in their 7th Annual Fan Fest.
On August 19th, some
of us joined our Brother Knights of Council 12348 in Somerset in the corporate
celebration of the Eucharist, supporting our Priests with prayerful gratitude.
Our own Father Bob Oliveira gave the homily.
Following the Mass, Council
12348 treated us with a great roast beef meal.
Many surrounding councils were also present.
On Thursday, August 21st,
our St. Mary’s Council 11690 presented
the Charity Award of $4,000.00 from the State Council to
nine-year-old Rachael Weber of So. Worcester St. in Norton,
in order to purchase 2 hearing aids.
September will see our youngsters returning to school and to Religious
Education classes. We are grateful
to all those who volunteer to share their knowledge of God’s Good News with
our youth, who are our future.
St. Mary’s Church will hold its Parish Picnic on Sunday, Setember 14th.
We need all the help we can get from the Knights of our Council 11690
in planning, in setting it up, in cooking and serving the meal, in
organizing games and activities, and in cleaning up.
This event is our major project of September, showing our Surge with
Service for our Parish Family. Please
join!
The Installation of our Officers will take place at 4:00 PM in St.
Mary’s Church on Sunday, Sept. 28th. The meal that follows is prepared by The Carriage House of
Easton and served at the K of C Hall of Easton Council 238, on Route 106.
Awards will be presented after the meal, among which is the Public Safety
Award from the State Council to Norton’s Police Officer Michael V. McKenney.
Vivat Jesus,
Norm
Corriveau

The John H. Drane Family
As mature Roman Catholics, it is our continued
responsibility to educate ourselves and our families regarding the teachings of
the Church. This is a time in history where we live in what our Holy Father John
Paul II defines as the "culture of death". At our baptism we are
called to be Christ's disciples. We are called to holiness--- called to witness
to Christ and His good news, therefore bringing His Light, Truth, and Life to
our culture. Knowledge of the truth given to us by Christ through His Church
enables us to make good decisions. These decisions not only effect our own lives
and the lives of our families, but also our society.
The
following is a brief list of resources to aid you in learning more about the
Church's teachings regarding Life:

As
Catholics, and especially as Knights of Columbus, it is imperative that we
spread the culture of Life and that we pray each and every day that all life be
respected from conception to natural death. All life is a gift from God. All
life is precious.
Let
us daily ask for Our Lady's intercession to guide us to defend Life.
Fan Fest 2003
by
Paul Grenier
As the Knights of Columbus celebrate Family Week, our
council had the opportunity to witness history in the making.
Bronson Arroyo of the PawSox pitched the fourth nine-inning “perfect
game” in the 120-year history of the International League.
The Pawtucket Red Sox beat the Buffalo Bisons (Cleveland Indians) by a
score of 7-0 on Sunday, Aug. 10th.
There
were plenty of family and friends tailgating prior to the game that started at
1:00 PM. Following the perfect game
which lasted 2 hours and 10 minutes, all those attending had a great time at the
PawSox 7th annual Fan Fest, typifying what family life is all about.
Special
thanks to Brother Jack Camara for procuring the tickets to a block of great
seats on a special day. Baseball,
Family, Friends, and a Perfect Game……… Priceless!
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Brother Knights
who have donated their time, energy, and expenses in producing the following:
·
PGK
Tom Jarbeau for providing and
printing all the mailing labels of our monthly newsletters;
·
Peter
Pino for printing the colorful
tickets to our St. Mary’s Parish Picnic of September 14, 2003;
·

Let us recognize our Brother Knights who devote their
precious time and energy in coaching our youth of Norton.
The youth is our future. Here
are some of our coaches who teach our youth good sportsmanship and valuable
discipline. Thank you!
Dan
Dennis, coach
of the Norton Knights
“It
has been a privilege for the past 14 years to coach some of the area’s finest
young men, as coach of the Norton Knights.
Being from Fall River, I played baseball till my middle thirties.
In Norton, baseball ended at 18 years old.
My goal since 1989 was to allow 25 players to follow their dream, whether
a college scholarship or a professional signing was possible.
One of my players summed it up when he thanked me for giving him the
opportunity to continue playing baseball. Some
of my former players have gone on to be dedicated firefighters, police officers,
and devoted fathers. I look back at
my experience with these young adults and feel proud to have been associated
with them.”
“I
started coaching youth sports 7 years ago.
My oldest son, Nathaniel, was playing his first year of tee ball,
and I thought it would be fun and a good way to spend time with him.
Since then, I have coached
on one of my kids’ teams every year, and
have also coached soccer and basketball. Being
involved in youth sports is a great way to help teach our kids the values of
good sportsmanship and teamwork, and
how it is important to just have a fun time doing it.”
Dave Carnevale, co-coach
of the “Angels”
“I
have been coaching for 6 years in the Norton Youth Baseball.
This year, I helped in co-coaching with Joe Travers for the “Angels”,
sponsored by Marcot Designs. Working
with the youth of Norton is very rewarding;
I see our youth enjoy the great sport of baseball.
Endeavors like this requires volunteers;
and, I’m happy to be part of this volunteering.
This year, our baseball team won the championship, showing the values of
teamwork and sportsmanship.”
“Going
back some four years ago, I was asked to help coach as an assistant for my
daughter’s recreational town basketball team.
During this year as an assistant, I learned a great deal about the game,
in addition to helping most of the girls on the team learn about the game
themselves and the meaning of teamwork. The
following year and each year afterward, I have coached my daughter’s recreational town basketball
team and have enjoyed every minute of this opportunity. Each year, I look forward to the next season,
just as my daughter looks forward to her Dad coaching her team.
In fact, over the past couple of seasons, I feel I have several daughters
on the team as they have become part of our community family.
Each year starts out with a new group of girls, some of which have
experience and others that are simply just beginning. The coaching pleasure becomes even more significant when you
see your team playing as if they have been together for several years and
understand the meaning of teamwork. It
doesn’t matter whether you win or lose a game, it’s the pride and
satisfaction that both you and the girls enjoy in playing the game and working
as a team.”

coach of the Norton “ Angels”

coach

Fourth Degree News
By
Paul Grenier
The main source of funds for our Fourth Degree Cardinal
O’Connell Assembly is its annual lottery.
With its proceeds, we are able to provide regalia to our Sir Knights who
want to join our Honor Guard for religious and patriotic events.
The proceeds are also used to fund the Monsignor Pitaro Scholarship
Award, as well as supporting a seminarian.
Because of these commitments, we rely on your generosity for
participation in our lottery.
From
November to August, a monthly drawing is held at the end of each business
meeting for two $25 prizes. At our
installation dinner, a $1,000 grand prize is drawn. Sir Knights Tom Castello and Joe Daley have won the grand
prize the past two years.
Only
100 tickets are sold at the cost of $50 per year or $5 per month.
If interested in participating, please make your check payable to
Cardinal O’Connell Assembly, or you can talk with Norm Corriveau or Paul
Grenier.
Our
next monthly Mass will be September 7th, 8 AM at St. Joseph’s
Church in Kingston.
The
lottery winners for August are as follows:
# 99 Maura Kane of Brockton
# 87 Gerald Graziano of Brockton
