Grand Knight’s Message                                                                      August
by Norm Corriveau

Our Knighthood is a vocation:  a calling to service.  We are called by name to serve His Church,  our families,  our community,  the youth (our future),  and our own Council 11690.  We pride ourselves in responding generously to our calling by reaching out to others as Jesus showed us.  We do this together, as a team,  in the spirit of fraternalism.  This means  “being a joiner” and stepping forward.

Our monthly newsletter outlines a calendar of coming events,  inviting our Knights to participate.  All we ask is that you make an effort to join us in that spirit of fraternalism.  We are FAMILY !

Forget About Me,  I Love You. =  F.A.M.I.L.Y.

In July, many Knights (17)  and their immediate family members (9)  generously volunteered at LaSalette Shrine in two Steubenville East Youth Conferences:  two weekends.  Collectively,  they volunteered some 800 hours of service toward making our two Youth Conferences run smoothly for the 5400 high-school students and their chaperones.  What a vivid and shining example for our youth who are our future!

This year’s theme for the conferences was  “Just Live It” (John 15:16).  We collectively did just that.  I am exceptionally proud of all those who came forward to volunteer,  giving freely of their precious time and energy.

This August, we celebrate the K of C Family Week,  August 9 – 16, 2003.  Let us do something special to enhance our own family life.   Our Family Director, Jack Camara,  graciously has stepped forward again in reserving a block of box seats right behind homeplate:  a good time for the family.  The Pawtucket Red Sox will face the Buffalo Bisons (Cleveland Indians) on Sunday afternoon,  August 10th.  This game is the 7th Annual FanFest where you can meet the players after the game.  Jack may still have some tickets available at $7.50 each.  Call Jack at  508-285-8472.

Our St. Mary’s Parish is also in need of volunteers for our new year of religious education.  Again, our youth is our future.  Let us try to help out and share our God-given talents.

St. Mary’s Parish Family is also in need of volunteers for just 1 Friday evening per month,  working in any way at Bingo.  The more helpers we have, the more our fraternalism will shine!

Vivat Jesus,

Norm Corriveau

Reflections on Steubenville East

Steubenville East is known as two weekends of Youth Conferences at LaSalette Shrine in Attleboro.  Each weekend had about 2700 high school students, who traveled with their church youth groups from all over the eastern coast of North America to share their faith by singing and worshiping together.  The speakers are from the Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.

Here are some reflections from some volunteers of our council:

DGK Norvel Cason:   “ The theme  “Just Live It”(John 15:16) was unknown to me.  So, I decided to ask one youngster at the Steubenville Conference:  “What does it mean?”  I was prepared for some vague answer that I would soon forget.  But, the response that came back caused me to freeze and become speechless.  The response was:  “GOD CHOOSES YOU”.  It was a revelation that I have been reflecting on since the youngster responded to my question.  I am convinced that Steubenville East can be a cause for lifelong reflection, and many of the kids do reflect on the experience, now and later in life.  It may sound cavalier, but the thought that “GOD CHOOSES YOU”,  coming from a kid is overpowering.”

PGK Paul Grenier:   “Every year that I volunteer at Steubenville East,  I have the opportunity to see our youth celebrate their faith in various ways, either individually or in groups.  In today’s world,  it is rewarding to see our future in their relationship with God.  As a volunteer, I am also rewarded with the spirituality from the Youth Conference and with the excitement of the youth as well as of the volunteers.”

GK Norm Corriveau:   “At Steubenville East,  I am deeply touched by seeing the grace of God pouring down on these high school students who are our future.  When these kids board their busses on Sunday afternoon,  they are glowing with energy to further follow Christ and bear fruit for Him in their daily lives.  What a rewarding experience to see God’s grace at work!

Lucile Drane:  “As chairperson of Registration, I did not come in contact with the youth.  But, I was impressed with the dedication of the group leaders and chaperones;  they were eager about the weekend,  even sleeping in the tents;  and, many have been attending these Youth Conferences for years.  Some had started as youth participants, but returned later as chaperones when they were old enough.   I also worked concessions on Saturday night.  The youth were so enthusiastic and appreciative of all that the volunteers were doing.”

Donald Thibeault:  “As I was volunteering on the weekends of Steubenville East Youth Conferences,  I met two students: one from England and one from Bermuda.  Both were visiting friends who invited them to attend a weekend at the Youth Conference.  They were so impressed by the spirituality of the weekend and by how well organized all the events took place.  They expressed their wish of living close to a place like LaSalette Shrine.”

Dave Carnevale:   “I was an usher at the Saturday Mass  celebrated by Bishop Reilly of Worcester.  It was very uplifting to see so many young people celebrating their faith and being so genuinely enthusiastic.  With the many negative things we hear about today’s youth,  this event reveals and confirms the positive aspects of youth ministry.”

Thank You

By Dave Carnevale

Thank you to all who prayed and sent their sympathies at the passing of my mother in June.  I did not expect any Knights from St. Mary’s in Norton to travel all the way to Ludlow.  But, I was surprised to see three Knights at the Friday wake and one more at the Funeral Mass on Saturday.

Fourth Degree News

By Paul Grenier

Our next monthly Mass will be August 3rd at St. Francis in Braintree at 9 AM.  The Supreme Master has requested that all Councils and Assemblies send in the names of all members currently serving in Iraq for a special presentation.

I had the honor last night of presenting Norm Corriveau with his Past Faithful Navigator lapel pin.  I would like to thank Norm for all he has done for our Assembly over the past fraternal year.

The installation of officers is tentatively scheduled for September 13th at St. Mary’s, starting with the 5:30 Mass.  The installation will take place in the church following the Mass.  Dinner will follow at St. Mary’s parish center immediately following the installation of officers.  We are just waiting for confirmation of the Master for the date chosen.

The winners for the July drawings were:
