Penny Whistle Page
One of the things that drew me to Irish dance was the music. I loved the rhythm and cheeriness of it. I guess I wasn't satisfied with tapping my feet like everyone else! After dancing awhile I decided to take up the penny whistle. I know a couple of tunes and have some sheet music at home. I'm still a beginner but here's some tips and links I've gathered up! If you have any tips or information to give send it to me!
My whistle
As I have no scanner I cannot put a photo up or anything, but my whistle is the run-of-the-line Walton's D with the plastic fipple. I've played it so much all of the weird plasic lining on it has come off and I have stripped the sticker off as well, so it looks like a plain copper whistle. It's out of tune and I can't tune it for the life of me, but I'm working on it!
How to tune an un-tunable whistle
I know I've said I can't tune my whistle but that's only cuz I can't tell a C from a B by themselves. If you get a cheap Waltons or Acorn or whichever where the head is glued on the body there is still hope. -Place the head in hot water (not too hot or boiling or else you'll do damage to the head (or fipple). -Remove the head and wash off any glue residue from the head and the body. -Replace the head, it should be tight, but you should now be able to move it up and down. -Now you should be able to tune it. (That is if you have an ear for it!!)
