Background:
A real life Rip Van Winkle, except it wasn't merely 20 years, it was 3,000 years. It wasn't by sleeping those years; it was a desperate escape from annihilation. Just before the turning of the Third Age into the Fourth, this once bureaucrat had taken to the field. Defending their holy sites from Wan Xian on a mad lust for power, they armed even the scribes to the task.
Total war came. The Wan Xian, once noble beings had turned into the very demons they once fought. Hundreds dead, Shinma nearly wiped out, but the Wan Xian's numbers were far superior, their passions drove them on even when their bodies were ready to give out under them. Few were left when he and others made ready to abandon this place, in hopes to assist their fellows elsewhere, in other areas the hordes hadn't yet reached. The star ways were the only option.
By time he touched earth again, things were different, strange. It was now modern times, and he was sorely out of place, returning into the middle of the United States. His kind was still in this world, but they had changed, adapted to this new place that was slowly unworking the powers that composed him. Even as he was learning the new ways of this world, he was dying. He needed to be reborn, as had the rest of his brethren.
A ritual was performed, his fellows sacrificed their own precious memories in hope that he would be able to gain their forgotten knowledge: The power to be reborn into a human body. The evening of the ritual, a gate opened, and he could do nothing but step inside.
It worked, though sometimes he wishes it hadn't. The knowledge of those times centuries ago is still with him - mostly. It was necessary, the theory goes, for some of it to be forgotten, so that he would know the modern age from the boy's body he took. Crawling from the flaming mass of wrecked car, he looked once again upon the world from his new state.
A few years have past since, and he's grown used to his less powerful state. He's even returned to Little Asia, the place he jumped through time to reach. Out of desperation, what he remembers of times long past is written down, so as not to ever forget it. It's his pet project between long hours at his florist job and beginning his paperwork to enter college. When completed, it will be something the others can appreciate, something they themselves can read to try to bring back their own long forgotten memories. Zheng, however, is scared to find out that they can't remember... and then he will be totally alone.
