Who her father is never came up in conversation. She wondered for a while when she was growing up, but as she became a teenager, it was generally accepted as just another fact of life. There was more than enough outside influences from her mother's friends to keep her occupied.
Erika's mother and the closest friends she kept were all Fae, and Erika had the fortune to be born partially of their world. Only partially however, and she was resigned to being simply Kinain. She participated, but always keep to the edges of all the events. She helped, but never was given exception since it was -expected- of her. Yet, her mother's house was welcome to any of the court's Kithain, and they frequently visited the boggan in her home territory. Mom being a teacher also meant that she was one of the many scouts for newly born or imminent Chrysalis. It's also how she met her oldest and most dear friend.
When Erika was 10, she returned home from school to find an Eshu boy slightly older than herself there at the kitchen table, eatting and talking with her mother. She slinked around the edges of the kitchen, venturing into the fridge for something to eat and then to slink upstairs to her own room to let her mother talk with the new recruit. As she was leaving the room, he called her back over and pushed a chair out for her to sit at the table with them. This gave the young girl pause, and she latched onto the boy's, Sebastian's, attention easily.
As she grew up, she enjoyed various sports; the adrenaline and the spectators always made a shiver of excitement up her spine. Yet, she developed asthema that's only gotten worse as time goes on and the doctor's never could attribute the the original cause to any one event. Erika also excelled in scuplture, which she greatfully showed off to the nobles at court that never paid her much heed before then. She even started to learn Changling history and the various intracsies of court.
The summer she graduated from High School, an aunt on her mother's side had taken ill. Having gotten all her paperwork done toward attending UCLA in the fall, she agreed to fly to Missouri to help out her uncle and two young nieces adopt to the changing health of their wife and mother. Time spent there was rather normal in comparison to what she left in LA. This side of her family was completely mundane, and it was a fairly shocking change of pace. She kept herself busy amidst all the running around after her 5 and 2 year old nieces by working on another scuplture, this one a request by one of the knights in her mother's court. But, between those times, there was that strange school down the block. The first few times, there were legitimate excuses for her to go there. A missing ball that'd gone into their yard. Several times afterward, she found herself wandering over there to take a peek at who wandered in and out of the place. But she pursued it no further and let the school be.
Fall came once again and she returned to LA. The commission work done for the knight, the nobles even put up an informal ball to display the newest work. Her mother spent days sewing a voile dress for Erika to wear, and even Sebastian had returned from his jaunt across the country for the event and meant to accompany her to it. As they crossed the threshold of the gathering place, a crown of jasmine and glamour was placed on her head and as the Enchantment seeped into her bones, something else happened. She saw, but she -saw- more than that. Colors were more vivid than even those few previous times she'd been Enchanted. She could sense the seperation of the layers of reality, and time seemed to melt and fuse into one. A hundred balls were existing in the same moment, a thousand conversations tittered around her. She blacked out then after wandering into the place a few steps more, mumbling and murmuring nonsense while in her unconscious state.
A man by the name of Jacob came to her rescue. He'd been in attendance to the balls before so Erika's mother recognized his face enough to let him near her daughter as she had a 'fit.' He chuckled and directed everyone other than himself, Erika and her mother out of the guest room that she'd been taken to. Several minutes later, she awoke and found it was like she was dressed in someone else's skin. The next several hours were spent explaining to the boggan and her daughter that she'd Awakened and all that entailed. He himself was a mage, a member of the Cult of Ecstasy with ties to the Fae through his sect. It was all a great deal to understand at once, but she promised to talk to him again in a few days after she'd had some time to recover.
The ball was an even bigger success than suspected, with the curiousity to Erika's health after her fit. The presentment of the piece went off smoothly, and no further incident happened. She recieved a bit more attention than usual, the Fae both distrusting the scene earlier and intrigued at the same time. Sebastian had, unfortunately, been brushed aside most of the evening. Some days later, Erika got in contact with Jacob and agreed to come to him to find out more about what's really going on.
A relatively quiet month passed. A few weeks into the new month, the ill aunt passed on. Her uncle and nieces were utterly wrecked by the suddenness of it all. The aunt'd taken a turn for the better, but then.... she was gone. A bit frustrated that it would cost her an entire semester from college and she'd be gone from her new found mentor, she accepted their invite again.
This time, when the nieces lost their kite in one of the school's trees, things happened differently. She found that this was a chantry, something her teacher had mentioned was sometimes a gathering of mages from any tradition. She's made a score of friends, most of them from other traditions, and she's given serious consideration to staying here, learning from these mages and leaving all her friends, mentor, and her mother in LA. But... then again, can she really leave them behind?
