The First Days of School

Before Class:
- Welcome
Back Banner stating Room #, Teacher, and Name of Class
- Have
Welcome Back/Plan for the School Year handouts prepared for each student
and placed in a tray labeled please take one.
- Have
a “Braggin Wagon” prepared to give the students
a look at who I am.
- Have
Ozark suckers in a tray beside the Welcome Back handouts for each student.
- Have
runway set up in room to where students have to walk to the front of my
desk where I will be standing to greet them before they take their seats.
- Have
a student profile placed on each desk to be completed as bell-work.
Greeting As They Walk The Runway:
- Be
standing in front of my desk to greet each student with a handshake and
hello.
- Tell
each student where the trays with their handouts are.
- Tell
each student about the bell-work on their desks.
- Tell
each student to locate their desk by performing the computation on the
front of their handout. The
computation will equal the number of a desk.
Welcome:
- Welcome
the students as an entire class.
- Ask
them to continue their bell-work while I take attendance.
- Pull
out the “Braggin Wagon” and let my students know
who I am in and outside the classroom.
Student Introduction:
- Have
the students (one at a time) introduce themselves and give one unique
quality they bestow.
Welcome Back/Plan of the Year Handouts:
- Have
the students walk through the Welcome Back handout with me.
- Provide
teacher contact information for students and their parents.
- Provide
webpage address for students and parents.
- Explain
objectives
- Explain
grading system
- Identify
required class materials
Policies/Rules:
- Ask
the students to find the policies section in their handout
- Discuss
the importance of the policies and the respect the students will earn by
following the policies.
- Explain
the class rules
- Explain
that they will be followed by everyone and will be enforced consistently.
- Explain
the tardy policy
- Discuss
attendance and what to do about make up work if absent
- Discuss
NO CHEATING or academic honesty
- Explain
the policy on late work
- Explain
the policy on make up work
Class Procedures:
- Ask
the students to find the classroom procedures section of their handout
- Explain
the procedures will ensure and organized well running class
- Explain
the difference in procedures and rules
- Explain
and rehearse the following procedures: entering the class, bell-work,
picking up materials, turning in work, coming to attention, arriving late,
and leaving the classroom
- Let
the students know that the other procedures listed in the handout will be
explained and rehearsed as they come up throughout the year.
Class Dismissal:
- Let
them know how excited you are to have them in your class, how pumped you
are about the new school year and welcome them back again.
- Rehearse
the procedure to turn in work (student profile)
- Rehearse
the procedure to leave the classroom
- Dismiss
class when the bell sounds
