Linux Quick-Start Guides

Most new Linux users often experience problems getting their basic desktop system running. Problems that often crop up include getting the soundcard to work, or getting a CD-Writer working, or even changing window managers on X. This site aims to provide a few tips to get people started on these common, and sometimes daunting tasks. These guides are not, by any means meant to be definitive, but instead to help new users get started. Where appropriate, links to external documentation found either on the web on even on your own system will be referred to.

These guides are written using Slackware 8.1 as a reference system. I will try to make these guides as generic as possible so that they work on all systems, but there might be small deviations here and there. For instance, Slackware stores it's online documentation in the /usr/doc directory. Other distributions might use /usr/share/doc. Despite these minor differences, the basic ideas remain the same. Linux is Linux,no matter what distribution you use.
