Moo Pahl Dan Khum 

·       Best done outside on a sunny day with a breeze

·        Khum = silk

o       Silk was a very valuable commodity in old days

o       Most important word as it means Moo Pahl Dan Khum is very valuable

·        Reasons to do Moo Pahl Dan Khum

o       Rejuvenate mind and body for eternal youth

o       Work Chung Shin Tong Il of yourself

o       Enhance personal ability for martial discipline, knowledge, and well-being

·        Form of standing meditation or silent thinking

·        Simple standing exercise that can be shared with everyone (Soo Bahk Do practitioner or not)

o       Can be modified for elderly, infirm, etc. to enhance their lives

o       Variations are currently being created

o       There are many variations, and no one right way

o       Only right way is to do it

·        Chi Gong or Qi Gong

o       Chi or Qi = life energy

§         Air is important element of life energy

§         Moo Pahl Dan Khum brings air to body concentrating it on certain areas

o       Weh Gung: isometrics/isotonics to get blood (that carries oxygen/air) throughout body

o       Neh Gung: pure love energy, mind is more aware of what is going on inside body

o       Shim Gung: effortless, work on fluid continuity (Soo Gi)

 General Notes

·        Mind = General = Primary Actor

·        Neh Kang Weh Yu: Make mind (inside) stronger, and outside softer

·        O Heng (5 elements)

o       Fire = Hwa = fire

§         Hwa Gi = Fire Energy = lower body energy (keep all in lower body)

o       Wood = Muk = continuity

o       Water = Soo

§         Soo Gi = Water Energy = upper body energy (keep all in upper body)

o       Earth

o       Metal = Gold = mind

·        Awareness of application of Huh Ri – one of the main focus of training

o       Gathering of energy – another critical focus of training 

Ki Cho

·       Don’t let elbows and shoulders fight gravity

o       Keep them loose and comfortable

·        Front Snap Kick (Ahp Cha Nut Gi)

o       Feel contraction in abdomen in the intermediate position

o       Contraction should begin process of bringing leg to intermediate position – leg muscles should not bring leg to intermediate, just the Huh Ri and contraction

o       Contract Huh Ri at end of kick as well as beginning of kick!

 Hyungs

 ·       Chil Sung Sam Ro

o       Ta Ko Sik preparation:

§         Bottom arm is straight down in preparation motion, not bent

§         Similar elbow to elbow preparation as for other mahk kee techniques (i.e. Ha Dan Mahk Kee)

o       Soo Do Mahk Kee preparations and actions should be directed by gravity

o       Yo Sik:

§         Make sure shoulders are lined up in one line to allow energy to flow freely

o       Going down the middle in middle of hyung (after 4 Hu Gul Chung Dan Soo Do Mahk Kee techniques)

§         Cadence is 1----2---3—4-5,6/7 (faster as you go) with ki ahp at last motion

·        Chil Sung O Ro

o       Toward the end, the double U punch (like in Passai)

§         Top fist should be higher than own mustache area – imagine you standing up, you need to punch facial area if opponent is standing

§         Bottom fist should be parallel to ground for solar plexus area attack

o       Right before the Jip Kye Son (strangle hold)

§         Punch and block should finish at the same time as landing of second leg (back leg)

§         Soo Do should be done at medium speed as in checking distance

o       In the beginning half, the Ahneso Pahkero Cha Gi techniques should not hit front hand at all, just the back hand

o       In the beginning, the Ha Dan Mahk Kee, Sang Dan Mahk Kee, Chung Dan Kong Kyuk, Teul Oh Chung Dan Kong Kyuk should be in this rhythm:

§         1—2,3,4; NOT 1,2—3,4!

o       Part with hands crossed standing straight up – left hand on the outside!

o       Preparation for Hwak Kuk Jang Kap Kwon is with top hand on bottom

·        Du Moon

o       Preparation for Hwak Kuk Jang Kap Kwon is with top hand on top

o       Preparation for Hu Gup Yup Mahk Kee (after Hweng Jin Kong Kyuk) and Sang Dan Mahk Kee/modified Ha Dan Mahk Kee the same

§         After each respective Hweng Jin Kong Kyuk is the same: front hand on the bottom, elbow NOT bent, rear hand on top – make sure elbows cross!

o       Make sure there is abdominal contraction and use of Huh Ri in preparation for Hwak Kuk Jang Kap Kwon. 

·        Choong Jul Hyung

o       In coiling motions (at where form turns directions from East to West):

§         Punching hand (front hand) knuckles should point forward in the direction of the punch

o       Where hands cross in a relaxed state in Sa Ko Rip Ja Seh, keep hands over front knee.

o       No jump on last motion!

o       Circular motion (not linear) for block (going across body and face) before the Choong Jul motion

·        Po Wol Hyung

o       Middle of hyung with hands crossed standing straight up – right hand on the outside!

o       Preparation for Hwak Kuk Jang Kap Kwon is with top hand on top

·        Yang Pyun

o       First motion (and every other like it) is a short punch, not a block

o       Preparation for second motion:

§         Punching hand drops straight down like ready position for Ta Ko Sik

o       First cross hand with breathe (like at the halfway point of Chil Sung Il Ro), left leg is back, but right hand is in front/top

o       Be sure to use Huh Ri for first and second motion, and keep elbows connected to Huh Ri, not raised up fighting gravity

o       Bottom arm in first motion is parallel to the ground and comes from the Huh Ri like a short punch
