Well this edition of Studio 69 is filled both with joy but is also filled with some sadness. 2002 has already been a roller coaster year with it only being 2 months in and I am about to tell you why.
First comes the sadness part of this commentary. It saddens me to report a passing of 2 friends of mine recently. First off a few days ago I got an email with it saying that Big Bubba Knuckles (Patrick Nuckols) had passed away of a heart attack. I shared some good memories of Bubba. When I first started out in the biz I met him at a UCW show in Alexandria, VA. He was always a nice guy and always enjoyed his company. All Bubba ever wanted to do was wrestle but he was a big guy and had previously had a broken ankle. But Bubba was bound and determined to get in the ring again and Bubba did. He had some classic matches with Shorty Smalls and of course I was happening to be refereeing some of these matches. Bubba always had heart and I always admired that. I got to go with Bubba to some shows and I always liked traveling with him except for this one time when we were coming back from West Virginia. It was freezing cold outside and he was driving down the road with the window down, I like to have frozen my little RRs off on that trip. Back in 1999 me, another guy, and Bubba formed the Virginia Wrestling Federation. After VWF folded due to personal differences...:), Bubba went back to doing what he wanted to do and that was wrestle. He got to do that and he died being an active wrestler on the Southern indy scene. It was at one point that Bubba was working every weekend. Bubba was doing something I wanted to be doing and I was glad he was having fun again because with the VWF stuff, I do not think he was having the fun he should have been having. It was good knowing you Bubba and Rest In Peace. Stay tuned as there is hopefully goingto be a Bubba Nuckols Memorial Show here in Virginia. This show will be the Final VWF show and it will be "One Last Hurrah".
Now another part of this commentary is to comment on a friend of mine that passed away 2 weeks ago. Howard Bronco Leshin was a man who made a big impact on a lot of peoples lives in both wrestling and his school teaching. He also died of a heart attack. I attended this funeral and I was amazed at how many people were there. It was well over 500 there as people were packed in the funeral home as well as outside for this service. I would not be surprised to see a school named after him for all his services he rendered. Bronco was a man that you could always talk to and depend on. I had a lot of fun talking to him at all the shows I did in NC for UWA. He was the Commissioner there and he did his job real well. Also aside from being a commissioner Bronco was a referee for KYDA Pro Wrestling. It was always good to watch him in the ring, he was truly a class act. Broncos son Devin (aka Devin Sturgis) is a good friend of mine and I see where Devin got his stuff fromhis dad. It is going to be hard going to NC now for shows and not seeing Bronco there. Now I will have to find someone else to talk to. I am sure Bronco is playing his role good in heaven. You are sorely missed. Take care and it was good knowing you, you definitely left an impact here on earth that will never be forgotten. Thanks for the memories.
My knee surgery on February 27th was a huge success and I look to start rehab in the next few days in Richmond, VA. I want to thank Dr. Meyers for the operation and I hope that he has fixed the problem for good unlike the last doctor who operated on it.
Virginia Championship Wrestling will make a return to their famous destination Mittys Night Club in Newport News, VA on March 24th with a whole new attitude. I am really pumped up about the new VCW as lately it has been in a spiral due to some stuff beyond our control. Those problems have been taken care of and it is back to business for us. VCW has a lot of stuff in the works so make sure you keep checking out the VCW website for more info. A lot of new faces are expected to be coming in as well. Also when RR returns to wrestle in VCW, it will be a changed RR it looks like. Will not tell all my secrets on here but it will be something you people will not want to miss as they do call me The King Of Controversy.lol
I have been getting emails recently asking when RR is coming back to Texas. Well it will be awhile. Knee surgery just happened, being involved with the new VCW, and other things I would say at the earliest fall is when I will make my return to Texas. I love going down there as the weather is a lot nicer and Houston has a lot more stuff to do.
I recently got to attend the first Wrestle Force America show in Richmond, VA. Wrestle Force America is of course the heavily advertised fed of radio personalities John Boy and Billy. I will say the show was okay but I think a lot of people were expecting more and did not get it. But then again I think most fans come to indy shows expecting to see what they see on Monday nights, I wish they would realize we are just people looking to have fun.
Last but not least I want to give a shout out to Samantha Kang. I want everybody to watch out for this girl in the future and word of advice, do not make her mad. The reason for me saying this is because of some of the stories she has recently told me. Other than that she is a good girl and my god is she HOT!!!!! Check her out on the web.
