High St Melbourn at Drury Lane. Note workers' cottages on High St--typical dwelling of our Everetts' time. The doorways are around 4'8" high--either the pavements are a lot higher, or everyone was considerably shorter a couple of centuries ago! At the time I took the photo, these cottages were closed and I believe they are earmarked by the National Trust--I did get to see inside one of the old stores which was under classification by the Trust: the old plaster daubing on the timbers was visible, and the underside of the thatching, where the "renovations" of the twenties had been removed for the inspection. Quite fascinating. |
