Materials:
- The
Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg
- Paper
- Pencils
- Post-its
- Pencil
Crayons or Felts
Hook:
- We
are going to begin our unit on exploration with a story called The
Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg.

- Have
a discussion with the students. What
do you know about Explorers? What
do you want to learn about explorers?
Can you name any explorers?

- Students
have a class discussion
|
|
|
- Show
the cover of the book and ask if anyone has read the story. Tell the students the title and name of the author.
What do you think the story is about?
What is going to happen?
- Explain
to the students that they will be drawing and writing what happened in
the story after the teacher reads to each post-it. Ask the students to take out a piece of paper and show
them how to fold it. Ask
if they have any questions.
- Ask
them to sit in the reading circle

- Students
discuss and predict the story
- Students
take out piece of paper and fold it so there are a number of boxes to
draw and write.
- Students
sit at the reading circle

- After
reading to each post-it, ask the students to sit in their seats, draw
and write what happened in the particular section of the story.
- When
the students are finished the task they can discuss and show what they
did to other students in their seating groups
- Give
the students about five minutes per section and ask them to come back
to the reading circle and read to the next post-it.
Repeat process
- For
the final storyboard, have the children predict how the story will end
by same format

go to their seats and do the task
- When
finished they discuss in their seating groups what they interpreted
from the section of the story
- The
students go back to the reading circle after five minutes

- Conclude
the
activity with discussion. Ask
if they learned anything new about explorers from The Wretched
Stone. Ask students
to share what happened in the story and show some of their work

students to hand in their story boards
