Develop
a number sense of whole numbers with addition and subtraction from 0 to
1000.
Develop
a number sense for whole numbers through cooperative learning
Objectives:
The student
will be able to:
Work
cooperatively in groups of two
Solve
mathematical problems under a time limit
Show
their understanding of number operations to their partner
Rationale:Positive attitude is needed for mathematics
and these attitudes can be achieved through activities that stimulate interest
and enjoyment.Cooperative group
activities can encourage interest and the ability to develop a deep
understanding for mathematics.
Description
of Activity:
Hand
back the assignments students did last math class (half the class did the
odd numbered questions and half the even numbers).
Teacher
reviews the mathematics students studied last class.
Students
are encouraged to participate and discuss any problems they are having
with the current unit.
Introduce
Tic Tac Math and show the students how to play the game.Hand out the instruction sheet and two sheets of grid
paper for the game.Tell the
students that they will be handing their answers back at the end of the
class.
Children
will be encouraged to ask any questions they have before starting the
game.
In
the previous math class, the students did an in-class assignment in which
half of the students were assigned the odd numbers and the other half even.Split the students into pairs and make sure that each student in the
group completed different questions for the assignment.
Each
student asks their partner a mathematical question from their assignment. If their partner answers correctly then they get to place an X or
an O on the Tic Tac Toe grid.
The
teacher walks around the classroom observing the children. The teacher lets the children know when their time limit
is up for each of the questions.
If
their partner answered the question incorrectly then they have to show
them the answer and explain why they got it wrong.
The
students asking the question then switches roles with their partner
Materials:
oMath
Journal to write answers
o2 sheets
of grid paper to draw Tic Tac Toe grids
oOne sheet
with instructions
oPencil
Instructions of Game:
Each
player chooses to be an X or O.The player that is X goes first
One
player asks their opponent the first question from their assignment
If
the player works out the mathematical problem on the sheet correctly and
answers the question correctly then they get to put their symbol (X or
O) on the grid.
If
the player answers the question incorrectly then their opponent must show
them how to answer the question from their assignment
