Objectives:
The
student will be able to:

for the activities
- Learn
how to do a crunch properly through review
- Do
stretching exercises
Materials:
- Mats
for each pair of students
- Gym
Strip
- Ball
(If Necessary)
- 2
Handouts: One from last class and the Stretching Hand-out
- Pencil
Lesson
Implementation:
Hook:
“We are going to continue are activities on
fitness today. How do athletes
prepare and warm-up for rigorous physical activities?”
Discuss with students about stretching.
Procedure:
- Have
the students help bring the mats out
- Tell
students to run around the gym at least three times
- Gather
the students on the floor
- Review
with the students about crunches and the proper form. Point out that doing the exercise properly is more
effective then the amount they each do.
- Show
the students incorrect ways and correct ways of doing a crunch.
Show the students the sheets from last and to write their numbers
horizontally instead of vertically
- Hand-out
the sheets to the students
- Discuss
about stretching and have one student come up with you to demonstrate the
stretches they can do for the period in pairs. Do Neck, shoulders, upper body, and legs for stretches
- Show
how to do new sheet. If they
finish the stretches then let them know that you will be walking around and
will show them how to do a v-sit. They
can use their old sheet to record their data.
Ask if they have any questions
- Tell
students to form in their pairs from last week and that each pair grab one
mat
- Observe
the students doing the activity and help when they need assistance
- Wrap-up
lesson and tell students to put their equipment away, hand in their sheets
and change
- This
time at the end of the class let students know that they have to go back to
the classroom before they drink water or go to the washroom
Conclusion:
- Have
them do laps around the gym and wrap-up the lesson if there is time
- Tell
them to hand in sheets, put equipment away, and change
Extension:
- Play
the game exercise tag
- Four
players are “it” and they go around with balls and tag people to
eliminate them from the game
- When
a person is tagged they must do at least five repetitions on a mat of the
exercise the tag person chooses
- They
are then eliminated from the game and must stand by the stage
Assessment:
- Level
of participation
- Behavior
during the lesson
- Data
on their worksheets
Justification
for the lesson:
- Stretching
is an important skill that students need to learn for rigorous physical
activity
- Learning
the stretches through cooperative learning
- Documentation
of participation on the data table
- The
children learn to practice physical activity safely
- Recognize
how people can become physically active
- Learning
a variety of stretches

Stretching: The Key to Safety and Exercise
Last
class you learned how to do crunches for an abdominal exercise.
It is important for professional and amateur athletes to not only keep in
shape, but to prevent themselves from injury.
The best way for athletes to not injure themselves is to do stretching
exercises. Your task today is to
learn stretching exercises shown by your trainer for your neck, shoulders, arms,
back, and legs. In the table below, check off the areas you have stretched.
Let your teachers know when you need assistance and when you are
finished. Hand in your sheet at the
end of the lesson. Have fun and
stretch safely.
