Scattergories Student Activity

 

Learning Outcome: It is expected that students will develop skills and strategies to use as they anticipate, predict, and confirm meaning while reading, viewing, and listening.

 

Objectives: The student will be able to

·        Work cooperatively in groups

·        Automatically retrieve a word after hearing, reading, and/or viewing the letter and categories

The object of this game is to answer as many categories using the same letter within a time limit.  The group that gets the most correct answers wins the round. 

 

Introduction Motivator: What are some techniques that you use to remember words?

 

Procedure

• Split class into groups of four
• Make sure students have scrap paper and pencils
• Hand-out sheets with several rounds and different categories (example below) or place on overhead
• Use a dice with all the letters of the alphabet
• Have some sort of timer device for each round
• Have each groups points tallied on the chalk board
• The group that has the most points win

 

Materials:

• Sheets with each round, transparency, or rounds written on chalk board
• Pen or pencil
• Timer
• Dice with each letter of the alphabet
• Paper to write answers

 

Closure: Perhaps, next time we can come up with our own categories for scattegories together as a class.

 

Sponge Activities: If have enough time can go over answers that class came up with.
