Music/Drama by Karla Falk

“Going on a Treasure Hunt” 15-20 minutes

Music Element & Focus:

Form: Call and Response (movement and vocal imitation)

Rhythm: Maintaining a steady beat; varied tempos

Objectives:

1)      remembering a sequence

2)      creating gestures and vocal sounds

3)      exploring slowing down tempo (ritardando) and speeding up tempo (accelerando).

Process:

1)      Do an intro, setting up the “me-you” signals for call and response.  Students will echo all speech fragments and gestures, paying close attention to vocal range and expression and tempo.

2)      Ask the class for ideas about gestures for what they’re taking on the treasure hunt: boat, map, compass, spoon.

3)      Here’s the verses:

(slow down tempo) feel around in dark, you find something; it’s soft, warm, furry, has a long tail, big eyes; you SCREAM!  Run out and go back through all the actions.  Get home and slam the door and say “SAFE!  Phew!”

Ensure that you calm the students down (give them a talk about moving calmly into the next activity) before moving on otherwise chaos will ensue!
