Music and Movement with the Olympics

Objectives:
TSWBAT:
- Each
group will be able to move as a particular Winter Olympic event to the music
- Learn
more about Winter Olympic events through specific movement and observation to the sound of
music
Materials:
Stereo with CD player, that can play copied CD’s
CD of different songs for the Activity
Guitar & Music
DV Camera and tape
Lesson
Implementation:
Hook:
“You remember from last class, our lesson on the Winter
Olympics and each event.” Review
with students about the Winter Olympics and the different events.
Relate the Winter Olympics to music and movement.
Mention
to the students that the lesson will be video taped and we will be learning how
to make a movie with this footage next computer class.
Play a song on the guitar for the first group to move to as
Procedure:
- Have
students get into a large circle and make sure they do not block the stereo
- Ensure
that each of the groups are written on the Chalk Board and the song and kind
of Olympic movement they will be doing.
- Discuss
about Olympic events and movement. What
are the Olympics? What are some
of the events? How does on move
in that event? Assign the class
to groups of four.
- The
groups will be as follows:
- Group
1:
Event- Figure Skating
Song- On the Guitar: Carlos Santana Featuring Everlast- Put
Your Lights On
- Group
2: Event-
Curling
Song-
Dido- Hunter
- Group
3:
Event- Skiing
Song-
Moby- Honey
- Group
4-
Event- Hockey
Song-
Pink Floyd- What Do you Want from Me
- If
have time:
- Group
5: Event-
Snowboarding
Song- Limp Bizkit- My Way
- Emphasize
for hockey NO BODY CHECKING OR PENALTIES!!!
- Explain
the activity and ask if they have any questions before you start.
Assign first group as to dance to the song the teacher plays on the
guitar
- Ensure
that there is one person recording the Music and movement for each group
- Follow
with each group and play the songs on the stereo.
Remember to record on the DV Camera
Conclusion:
Review the lesson with the positive aspects of the
classes Olympics and movement, and what the students can improve.
Let the students know that the movie will be edited and shown next week.
Assessment:

Potential
Problems:
- The
excitement level of the children might be high and create behavior issues
- Who
will be recording the activity?
- Level
of participation from each group
- Understanding

Justification for Lesson
- The
lesson allows students to participate in a cooperative group and convey
creativity to a particular Winter Olympic event with music
- Provides
more understanding to the Winter Olympics which is relevant to this year, as
the event is taking place in February 2002
- The
students can move creatively to the movement and rhythm of the music
- Playing
“Put Your Lights On” with the guitar provides excitement for the lesson
- The
mood of each of the songs allow students to express themselves with movement
to the specific Winter Olympic event
- Creating
an I Movie is a great incentive for students to participate and enjoy the
lesson
- This
lesson integrates a number of subject areas
- The
lesson is a movement activity and does not focus on language, which is great
