EDUC 418 – Weeks 1 – 3 – Mar. 25 – Apr. 12

Here’s what should be happening!!!

1.       Applications for NVSD will probably be due sometime this week. Include a photocopy of your EDUC 321 Evaluation form.

2.     You are responsible for lessons plans every time you assume responsibility for planning an activity. All lesson plans should be on or around your desk so when your F.A. comes to see you teach or to chat with you, we can also look through all your work and planning thus far.

3.     Your first all day workshop is on April 11 at LMCC. You should receive a rough outline of the agenda will be posted by April 8. Topics will be daybook and let me know if what else you need covered at this time by e-mail. Thank you. Some S.A.’s like you to show them your handouts, like a write-up or reflection of that day, and/or like you to discuss the topics covered with them. So, please make sure you know what format works best for your S.A. These are Professional days and may be seen as part of your Professional Development time for the week in your S.A.’s eyes. Check with them so that there is no confusion.

4.     Your F.A. is there for you and should know everything that happens. Run your questions by us first. It is better to be proactive than ... We do find out what has happened and it is always better if it came from you A.S.A.P. --Even if you are embarrassed to share this with us. Chat with us either through a phone call or by e-mail.

“The ultimate measure of a man or woman is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand at times of challenge and controversy”. – Dr. Martin Luther King.

You will have moments like these. So handle them professionally.

Follow the 3 R’s:

a)     Respect for self

b)    Respect for others and

c)     Responsibility for your actions.

When you realize you have made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Don’t get defensive! Take a breath. Think before you speak. Listen to what they have to say and follow through next time.

Remember also, that you should always get permission from both your S.A. and your F.A. whenever you go out of the school for your professional times, etc. Read the handouts on EDUC 418 Guidelines and UBC Student Teacher Responsibility. Read the Blue Handbook. The UBC calendar does not allow you to take time off during your 13 weeks to do interviews. Refer to p. 50. However, some S.A.’s don’t have a problem with this and allow you time during your professional development slots. It usually depends on your attitude and your effort.

Arrange to have your F.A. visit your school once to formally observe you teach before April 11. Each of us will let you know our schedule for these weeks so that days and times can be arranged.

5.     Your 13 week planning calendar is due on April 11. Please hand those into your F.A. at the Pro D day. Thank you.

6.     Have FUN!

Get plenty of rest each night!

Balance school work with some social time or if you work – that may be it.

Spend some time alone.

Feel good about yourself. Know your strengths and set goals.

Remember school commitments come first. So drop everything and be there! Attend staff meetings, help with bulletin board displays, attend parent teacher meetings, be a member of the staff, do your part!

Smile!

Be patient with the system.

Secretary’s day is sometime in April.

Show enthusiasm!

Show intiative!

You will realize what jobs need to be done by observing. Do something unexpected – clean the boards, mark work, bring in some flowers, clean up the staffroom, bring in treats, volunteer for ??? It is the small gestures that make people feel you care.

Show adapability and flexibility. Don’t panic! Instead of reacting, show  professionalism and responsibility. Not always do we or are we able to follow the IRP’s exactly – reflect on why or why not?

Show dependability and punctuality.

Arrive early and stay late.

Show cooperation. But remember that you still need to retain your individuality. This is your special quality that you bring to teaching and what you need to share with your S.A. and your students. Learn how to be collaborative.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it!
