UBC EDUCATION 418 GUIDELINES

1.       Lesson Plans

a)     If there are any concerns about UBC student teacher lesson planning skills, talk to your UBC Faculty Advisor before the Long Practicum begins on March 25th because that will directly affect how and if they can assume the 80% teaching load.

b)  Lesson plans must be done for every lesson they teach until workload is at 50%. Therefore, in example 3c below, at Week 4 the UBC Teacher is at 50% and will then be required by UBC Teacher Education to keep a detailed Day Book in lieu of full lesson plans. You may find that your UBC student teacher needs to do lessons plans or micro teaching plans for some lessons. Please allow and encourage them to do whatever is most effective in your classroom.

Guidelines for the Day Book will be provided at our April 11th Workshop. If you have any examples that you’d like to share please pass a copy on to your student teacher or Faculty Advisor.

2.     Feedback

Provide your UBC student teacher with frequent feedback. A good guideline is to provide two (2) written pieces of feedback per week until the 80% load is achieved. You may continue to use the format that suits both you and your UBC student teacher.

3.     80% Teaching Load

a)     Can not begin until 3 way conferences occur (S.A., F.A., and UBC teacher). Consider the 3 way conference as a progress report, guiding your student teacher on what they need to do to successfully complete their EDUC 418 Practicum.

b)  The earliest 80% load can start is around Week 5 or 6. HOWEVER, a gradual increment could work out to be:

Week 1 = 20%

Week 2 = 30%

Week 3 = 40%

Week 4 = 50%

Week 5 = 60%

Week 6 = 70%

Weeks 7,8,9,10 = 80%

or See Page 34 of the UBC Teacher Education Handbook

c)  Formula = Total 20 hours per week for 4 weeks

e.g., 4 hours a day for 5 days or 5 hours a day for 4 days
