WEBSITE PROJECT - MULTICULTURALISM
Rita and Benji
"A
Hotlist on Multiculturalism" http://south-sahali.sd73.bc.ca/listmuliculre.html
This is an excellent reference website that contains a multitude of links with multicultural themes. The website is well organized, easy to read and navigate and most of the links are relevant and very useful. The site was created by a South Sahali Elementary School and it is divided into 6 sections: Introduction, Multicultural sites, Africa, North America, Europe and Asia, and Stories, Art, Music, Holidays. Except the introduction, all sections contain further links.
The links are varied- some contain more general information, some are for
children to explore, and some for educators- they offer unit and lesson plans.
Some of the interesting links we
liked were:
Multicultural Pavilion- lots of definitions, info on teaching awareness, links to teachers corner with the toolbox full of ideas, lists of multicultural films, songs, and some great discussion/ bulletin board sites on multicultural theory and teaching and learning.
The World Fact Book- works like an online encyclopedia of countries with updated information.
KidsCom- an interactive site for students to communicate with other children across the world.
WWW Virtual Library- Indigenous Peoples- contains information indigenous cultures across the world.
A Unit on Stereotyping- integrated unit for intermediate grades
Many of the links relate directly to the course content in EDST 314. The most interesting link on the theory of multicultural education is called Multicultural Pavilion (in the introduction). It includes a whole “multicultural toolbox full of articles and definitions, much like we have discussed. Great for reference. There are several links to unit plans, lesson plans, and other ways to smoothly integrate cultural themes into your curriculum.
The only drawback to the site is that some links do not work, such as The Great Adventure or Global Gastronomer- Cuisines of the World (site down), and some are out of date such as Multicultural book reviews which has not been updated since '96. The link list is by no means exhaustive, but we felt that it made a great starting point, with some interesting information and ideas.
