Gay and Lesbian Educators of British Columbia

 (and their friends and supporters)

This is a very informative and practical website because it shows the resources available to educators and youth in British Columbia.  I would recommend the site to educators who want to find out more about the issue both personally and for their school or classroom.  Click on the link “Resources and Publications” in this section you will find a teacher’s resource book available to order, online lesson plans, a list of non-fiction and fiction books dealing with gender, racism, stereotyping, bullying and homophobia (k-12), websites for educators and/or youth, a student brochure and a Gay/Straight Alliance Handbook. There are also additional websites and resources in the “Links” and “Newsletter” sections.  In the  “Newsletter” section I found out about two newly released National Film Board of Canada videos approved by the British Columbia Ministry dealing with gender issues, verbal bullying and family diversity in both the elementary and secondary levels.  I went to National Film Board of Canada http://www.nfb.ca/celebrating diversity/web page and found the Celebrating Diversity page that states “Homophobia is an issue of safety and human rights. The NFB is committed to producing materials that assist educators, parents, children and youth in understanding and advocating for these basic rights.” This page provides information on the videos including age group intended for as well as pre-screening, screening and post -screening questions to help teachers navigate themselves though sensitive discussions. Teachers resource page for Grade 3to 7 and Grade 8 and up.  These pages look at how language shapes attitudes and guidelines for talking about appropriate language and terminology.
