Web Site Name: Introduction to Campaign 2000

Web Site Address: http://www.campaign2000.ca/

Summary:

Campaign 2000 is a cross-Canada public education movement to build Canadian awareness and support for the 1989 all-party House of Commons resolution to end child poverty in Canada. Campaign 2000 began in 1991 out of concern about the lack of government progress in addressing child poverty. Campaign 2000 is non-partisan in urging all Canadian elected officials to keep their promise to Canada's children.

Since 1989, the number of children living in poverty has increased by 402,000 and child poverty is clearly a signal of the increasing hardship for Canadian families.

Critical Evaluation of a Web Site:

Elementary School Level

How does it look?

1.       The Site does not take a long time to load.

2.     Good Pictures for staff and students of an intermediate level (visually descriptive)

3.     Author of the web site through: [email protected]

4.     There are pictures on the page that can be used to choose links (Image Map) not complete but some available.

5.     The information is in column form and is well laid out for visitors of the page.

6.     You are able to get back to the previous page by using your present browser.

7.     This web site has been updated as recently as Jan/02; therefore it is very up to date.

8.     The web site is in English and French making it adaptable for bilingual schools.

9.     There is a direct link to the webmaster from your outlook express if you have it.

10.  There is no sound available on this web site.

What did you learn?

1.       The title page tells you that it is about children and poverty.

2.     There are facts about poverty as an introduction to the page.

3.     There are relevant current statistics as well as commentary on this site.

4.     I don’t think you would find this kind of information in an encyclopedia especially suggestions for what you can do to help.

5.     From my limited knowledge of this subject I found no fault in the information presented.

6.     I think the pictures personalize the topic. One in five children are living in poverty. The children in the pictures could be them.

In class we have discussed how children can feel helpless after they learn negative facts about the world around them. When we talk about poverty we know that some of them are experiencing it first hand. This site offers suggestions and campaigns where their voices can be heard. You could tie post card mailing into a unit on government. The site may not be conducive for primary students but would still be a great teacher resource for facts and information of where we are at in the fight to end child poverty.
